A 3-year old is smarter than all of you

February 17, 2014

A Mensa 3-year-old girl is breaking records as the youngest new member to join the prestigious community with an IQ over 160. Called by experts as simply brilliant and an “unbelievable” case, Alexis Martin is making waves along the Web today in becoming part of the Mensa organization at such a young age. NewsOxy reveals this Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, that this gifted girl is already able to read fluently, has taught herself Spanish, and is capable of memorizing bedtime stories in a flash.

The 3-year-old girl and Mensa member is named Alexis Martin, and her parents have a very real reason to be proud of their young daughter. This brilliant child is said by her father Ian to be capable of doing things that almost everyone her age has not even become close to grasping yet, including learning a new language on her own, reciting extended phrases, and reading at a markedly high level. Ian Martin added that the apps on the iPad, particularly those in foreign language, have proved useful in enhancing his daughter’s advanced thinking prowess.

The unbelievable child is thought to have an IQ well over 160. In fact, amazed doctors who recently tested the 3-year-old Mensa member said that she scored so high on the critical thinking exam that they were unable to gauge her IQ fully.

Alexis was noted by her parents to begin reading capably at only 2 years of age.

“Probably 12 to 18 months or so we’d be driving around in the car and she would recite her bedtime stories from the night before. I mean we’re talking 20 to 25 page books, she would recite them from the night before but not just recite them, recite them exactly.” Ian said. “She can read and translate and correct us on Spanish”.

At this time, Alexis is thought to be at a fifth grade reading level. The Mensa 3-year-old girl managed to learn Spanish from studying on her parents’ iPad app. However, her parents soon realized that while their simply brilliant child is indeed a great gift, such intelligence is also posing some new and unexpected challenges.

“Does she go into kindergarten early? We are kind of hesitant because we do want her to to get that social aspect,” added Ian.

Due to her advanced IQ of 160 and unbelievable thinking ability for her age, doctors who tested Alexis Martin feel that this 3-year-old girl should never go to a normal school; instead, she should be offered a specialized program instead. To put it simply, she is too smart for the regular education system offered by schools today for a majority of students. At the same time, doctors are also aware that these types of children can also suffer from extreme anxiety, so social growth is equally important.

The Mensa society is viewed as a way for her and others like Alexis to engage in advanced intellectual discussions and opportunities.

“Anytime she learns a word and just picks it up through anything, she never ever uses it in the incorrect context, ever,” concluded her father Ian. “It’s amazing.”

It s actually pretty easy for very young kids to learn and speak many languages, the younger the easier. Reading impresses me more.

I'd like to see how this child turns out.

I recall from Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point, and he discussed how IQ doesn't capture creative thinking. For example, there's this test where you are giving two words--e.g. "blanket" and "brick." You then have 10 minutes to write down all possible uses for those two objects. One subject with an IQ of >160 wrote two lines of something boring. Someone with an IQ of 130 wrote two stimulating paragraphs about how the blanket and the brick could be used in variety of ways. IQ doesn't explain it all; neither do silly tests about matching patterns on various cards.

Easily true, I'm not the brightest bulb in the box.

Speaking three languages fluently means you're trilingual and those who speak two are bilingual, but if you just speak one? You're American.

Higher IQ is not just about memorizing, its about a greater capacity to think. I don't put a lto of stock in specific IQ numbers, but I have worked with a couple of kids who were absolutely brilliant. One taught himself to read before he was 2. Then there was the 11 year old attending college classes.

The first kid is doing well now. His parents home-schooled him, back when that was just a new thing. The school just could not deal with him,but they worked with the parents to ensure he was able to participate in PE, music, field trips and other activities (like plays). His parents tried to treat him like any other kid, its just that he learned algebra and calculus when other kids were learning to add and multiply... etc.

The other child, I don't know much about any more, but we were all concerned at the time. He could not, for example, take his own notes -- his physical hand writing skills were just not developed well enough. he took sociology classes and while he could remember all the information, just did not have the experience to put things into context. Worse, ,he did not interact much with kids his own age.

MENSA might be able to help the child, but it depends on the group. I am qualms about parents putting a 3 year old on display on youtube.

Agreed. And most other people are bilingual because they speak their own language and... AMERICAN. Because 'Merica mother fucker! We ain't need to speak no other languages bitch because everyone speaks American!

My three year old can't read, but he has most of his books memorized. I like to trick him by adding some words or removing some words and he always says, "Daddy, that's not right." If I do it a couple more times, it's eventually acceptable to him that I've added words.

In any event, my point is that three year olds can be pretty freaking smart. Let's see this three year old get a job.

I went to middle and high school with this kid who was taking college math classes as a 12 year old. He's 35 now and is a ski instructor in Utah.

Given her apparent intelligence, her wages may not be meager.

Welcome back by the way.

That's almost exactly what he says - "Why would I want to work 80 hours a week in an office when I can work 30 hours a week outside?"

This.

I remember taking an IQ test from like the 80s and one of the questions was essentially what do these all have in common, and then it listed a state and a bunch of words I didn't know. It turns out the words I didn't know were cheeses which was kind of stupid because that sort of required that I knew the names of the cheeses. So obviously that was a shitty IQ test.

And people can discount IQ tests all they want, they are the best measurement of intelligence. inb4 "BUT THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT INTELLIGENCES HURRDURR". No, you're just an idiot.
