Why do I keep a Facebook account?

Postby muy_thaiguy on Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:10 am

I rarely use it (except to comment on things like Twitch livestreams from LPers I watch), and it only seems to be a reminder of people who I used to know, like a person I had known since kindergarten is now living in Madrid, Spain and married. Use to be close friends, but I haven't actually seen or talked to him since we graduated high school. I guess I can keep it, if only for the occassional livestream thing. But I otherwise don't have much use for it.

*Edit. Just deactivated it. Not worth the constant reminders of people who only "friend" you to boost their own "friend" numbers, the numerous stupid game ads that you'll never play, and a bunch of political ads that only serve to piss off one person or another. I'm done with it.
"Eh, whatever."

I have some buddies in other countries I would not talk with otherwise and a couple that I don't get to hang out with in person because I'm busy with kids. Otherwise I would have flipped out and quit.

I ve got friends from many countries as i ve lived in many countries myself. Only way to keep vaguely in touch.
And competing for friends numbers seriously? Who does that? I clean up my friend list about once a year, just get rid of the ones you don t care of anymore.
One does what he wants with his facebook, choses to share what he want, and choses not to see what he finds ludicrous. Might not be relevant for you to keep your profile, you re not the first nor the last to lose interest in it.

"Only way to VAGUELY keep in touch"

There's your answer... if facebook is the only way to keep in touch with someone are they actually friends worth keeping around? Would your life be emptier without them?

If you really want to keep in touch with someone there are many ways of doing it without facebook.

I like to see what new scotch my buddy in Aus tried and his thoughts. I don't want phone him just to find that out. I have acquaintances in lots of places, it's nice to see pictures and read what they're up to, see what they ate at a restaurant, see their new pet or kid, read their kid got an award at school...

The only bad things are, "This cold weather sucks." statuses.

i resisted facebook for years...marketing people kept telling me i had to get on it for my business..."the new shiny thing everyone is doing." so i finally got on it with a personal account and then set up my business on it a few months later.

I spend way more time on it (just like this f-ing site) and have "friends" i have not seen since high school that are just nosy about what became of me (most are probably surprised i somehow managed to start a business and others probably think I am making the whole business thing up and i live in a van down by the river). it is nice to keep up with my brothers and sisters kids (lots of nieces and nephews) though. also nice (and a bit creepy) to see that ex-girlfriends find me there and stalk my status posts and my pictures.

Truth is, i use it mostly for business. I have a nice following on my business page and I network with other pond builders from all over the world and see what they are up to and what is new in the industry. we even have a couple of non public facebook pages where we can talk amongst each other in private. My business facebook page comes up as high as my website (first page) in my local market for just about any relevant google search and I have not spent a penny on my facebook page compared to the thousands and thousands of dollars paying a web person for the couple of sites I have had built over the years...page was just revamped and is a work in progress meaning i could spend way over the budget for it. I have made sales from my facebook page and have had strangers stop to tell me they are a fan of my page when I am advertising my trade at the local home and garden show so it is worth staying on for now.

i would post the business page link here but to be honest, you are all nuts and i am not sure i need to spend my time blocking you crazies.

i have some good friends from high school that i've spent in spain, do you expect me to call them every week or else i should forget about them forever? I receive a wedding invitation from some of them once in a while, it's an opportunity to go see them again ect.they contact me through facebook to invite me and ask for my new mailing address... This is just an example among many others... like sometimes you or your friends get to organize a big event... or their birthday party and creating an event page is the easiest way to explain the concept and get to know who is comming/maybe/not for organizational purposes. A facebook account is steady; your physical adress or your phone number can change throughout the years.
And who doesn't like to go check his FB on his BD and see wishes from lots of people you haven't talked to in ages? Also funny when you have a friend who just sees something incredible in the street and posts it, or who just has a funny anecdote that just happened...

"If you really want to keep in touch with someone there are many ways of doing it without facebook." this is a very stupid statement, given that FB is the best way to keep in touch. sure, you can find some other complicated ways... but if there is something more simple designed for it why bother?
And yeah, there are lots of annoying things, like your friends asking you to like their business page. Isn't there linkedin for that? I don't really like to mix pleasure and business, there are different type of social networks for that.

I have buddies that I would like to spend time more with and if I go to their country I do, if they come here they stay at my house.

Then there are people I met once or know other people I also know. If I end up unfriending one they get butt hurt it's weired. If I was going to hang out with them I would.

There were a few people that I unfriended because it bothered me to have them chatting constantly on my feed then I would never see them when they drop into town. Then they were sad about it. People are strange. I suppose I'm stranger again.

If people you're friends with on Facebook bother you, simply hide them from your news feed instead of removing them; they'll never know. Also, since you automatically follow any new friends now (which shows things they like etc), you can unfollow too. Both things can be done from their profile.

@betty - LinkedIn isn't really for business. It is for people in a professional environment. Some people use that to exclusively advertise their company, others don't. There is a slight difference. Lots of people generate a good amount of business through Facebook, and increase their reach/reputation at minimum.

I have a linkedin account as well. i don't spend much time there but I agree with Caffeine. sure, professionals can refer me to their friends but I think linkedin is better for people like my wife...white collar professional...not really a guy like me that builds things with his bare hands (ok, i use some equipment as well but sometimes just a wheelbarrow and shovel). i know some people in my industry that just use linkedin to push people to their website. i see them do the same thing with facebook page for businesses but i think they are doing it wrong.

I think my facebook business page is perfect for what i do as it is easier for me to post something that ends up going a little viral and leads to more people liking my page. An example of my work is my avatar photo...yes, i built that :D . when i post pictures like that, people like it or comment on it and then it ends up in their friends feed and my brand grows. I don't post statuses on my business page that ask for people to buy from me....more or less just build my brand and things i think people would enjoy seeing or reading. It is also a digital portfolio and one a stranger can interact with on a more personal level on their own time to decide if I am the right pond or waterfall guy for them. I have hundreds of photos of jobs...before, during, after, and years later and so on. I also make announcements when I have something news worthy...some featured water garden, presentation I am giving somewhere that is open to the public, interviews with local media, awards won, job openings, ect. i am just a small fish (see what i did there?) in the grand scheme of things, but I have a nice niche in my local market. I have people following my page from across the country as well as across the world...makes a guy feel good about himself.

betiko wrote:[ And yeah, there are lots of annoying things, like your friends asking you to like their business page. Isn't there linkedin for that? I don't really like to mix pleasure and business, there are different type of social networks for that.

I am not sure i have ever asked personal friends to like my page (although i did like it better when they were called fans). I have asked some strangers that find my personal page to move over to my business page as I have no idea who they are but they find me (friends of clients that have become friends of me in real life or situations like that). When someone does not understand what I do (some people think a pond i build is a "hole in the ground with water in it"), I refer them to my facebook page. i don't even think my dad follows my business page and i know many of my college buddies don't follow my page, not hurting my feelings at all.

I find it annoying when people use their personal page like it is their business page and I try and avoid that...if i wanted to hear about that i would be on your business page. that being said, I sometimes have a personal post referencing my business, but then it something I would not want a stranger following my business page to see. a couple of examples i have posted on my personal I can think of would be my 4 year old boy trying to catch fish in a clients pond with a leaf net or any of the other crazy things he does at my clients ponds, my guys doing something that could be considered unprofessional (my guys went swimming in a pond we were almost done with at the end of the day because it was so hot outside), unsafe (my guy standing on top of a 12' tall 9000 pound fountain stone we had just installed for a client....just think of a phalanx symbol and that is what he has in a his backyard...water is plumbed up through the stone and is spraying out of the top of the long cylinder stone), or when i make fun of a very poorly constructed water feature (with picture) I find in my daily travels.
