Alberta Legislators Gone Wild

Postby saxitoxin on Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:42 pm

Innisfail Middle School sent a letter to Speaker Gene Zwozdesky, Premier Alison Redford and the leaders of all three opposition parties after 90 Grade 6 students visited the legislature on Nov. 5.

“In the short time we were in session, we witnessed members tell each other that they ‘suck and blow,’ motions across the floor from one representative to another inviting them outside to fight, verbal invitation to fight, and again, numerous reprimands from the Speaker,” the Nov. 22 letter states.

The poor example set by the members became clear a few days later when the students held a mock legislature session at school.

“As we were assigning the roles for the people to play, one student put up his hand and said, ‘Can I be the guy who asks the other guy to go outside and fight?’” Stones recalled.

This isn't anything new. Jerry Springer was going to start his show in Canada, but Question Period already had the rights.

The system SUCKS AND BLOWS and needs to change. It's not politics, it's chaos. It's like that here too, not to mention Ottawa.

It's school kid recess in a legislative assembly hall. It's not democracy, it's bullying at it's worst.

It was no surprise to see Danielle Smith's name mentioned, even if she wasn't the one the letter focused on.

The Wildrose Party runs it's entire campaign on what the PCs are doing wrong, without actually suggesting anything they should change or what they'd do if we elect them. It was both an entertaining and frustrating campaign to watch, as voters latched onto the Wildrose early with all their criticism of the PC's wrong-doings, then realized that electing the Wildrose would actually get us nowhere, flipped sides back to the PCs. Nearly all of the voters that would normally vote Liberal or NDP or Green were forced to "hold their nose and vote PC", simply to stop the Wildrose from gaining power.

Since then, our politics have degraded to name calling, and yelling, and a bunch of telling each other they're doing things wrong, with nobody actually trying to fix the problem. Very similar to American National Politics.

Yep, she sucks too. It's nice to see Nenshi pushing Calgary in a more liberal direction locally, but at the provincial level, there's no way Alberta is moving away from the conservatives any time soon. She was just the lesser of two evils in the last election.

Well, she's gone now. Can't say I'm sad to see her leave.

I can't say I'm sad to see her leave either. I am a bit pissed off that she racked up $120,000 in trips paid by taxpayers, then bailed when she got caught.

Alberta hasn't elected a new Premier since 1971. Getty took over when Lougheed resigned, Klein took over when Getty resigned, Stelmach took over when Klein resigned, and Redford took over when Stelmach resigned. Whoever takes over for Redford is due to her resignation. This is partly due to the way politics works in Alberta (and Canada in general) but it shows how committed the province is to the Conservative Party.

There is a big worry that this is going to significantly boost the Wildrose Party in the next election. That would be exceptionally bad. Fortunately, it seems the next election won't be until 2016 so I'm hoping this falls off the radar by then. I'm guessing that was part of Redford's plan - resign now so the party has a chance in the next election instead of fighting it out and possibly lampooning the party for the next election.

There was a British MP a few years ago who learned British Sign Language for "bullshit" and signed it during PM's questions. Sorry for the random anecdote, but it amused me.

A big worry?? lol I'd be happy if this gave the Wildrose a better chance in the next election. After 43 years in power the Conservative party seems to have lost its way.

Yeah, sorry. I had never heard that they ruled and thought it was new.

This is pathetic. I have always been proud of Canada, but not so much anymore.

If a party can't respect our electoral rules and regulations, they should be dissolved.

I would much prefer everyone as an independent.

One of the big things Jack Layton was pushing in that election was election-reform. We all knew he wasn't going to get elected, but it was good to see somebody making it a big issue. There's no way a majority government should be allowed to form with less than 50% of the general vote.

Wildrose is too far right-wing. Like the Conservative Party, I agree with most of their economic policies because there is no way the province should be in debt (speaking of which, Ralphbucks turned out to be one of the worst decisions ever). But they want to argue on social policies that firstly, I believe the government should have no say in (same sex marriage, abortions, etc) and secondly, that waste the governments time discussing real issues, like economics.

Finally, having a Conservative government here in Alberta gives us power on the federal scale that no other party would have. As much as I dislike Harper's government, a Conservative government here is favourable in that sense.

We have a conservative government here too. I also agree with their fiscal policy, or most of it. However, we are flat out broke.

The end is nigh, I have seen the fig leafs.
