Capt. Briggs Victim of Auto Accident on Monterey Road-UPDATE

It seems that a week ago Tuesday Captain Briggs was coming from Paso Robles, to which place he had made a trip in his Oldsmobile Runabout, to visit Admiral Evans.

A cow was browsing the side of the road, with its back to the oncoming machine, which was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Captain Briggs was driving, With him was his chauffeur, George Wiston.

When the captain saw the cow, he slowed up slightly as is the custom.

Just as the machine was nearly opposite the cow, the latter leaped in fright to the middle of the road directly in front of the machine, which struck the animal square on.

An effort was made to keep the story or the accident quiet as the captain does not like notoriety.

THE PLOT THICKENS

Apparently, just two months before the "accident," Captain Briggs ordered a Loving Cup to serve as a trophy for the rose competition in the Los Gatos May Day festival, for which he had been retained as a special consultant due to his advanced knowledge of floral design. When the director-general of the May Day festival went to consult with Captain Briggs, Briggs was nowhere to be found, having supposedly left for several days to recreate at J.H. Henry's ranch in Templeton. Also, it turns out President Taft and President Roosevelt had both also donated trophies for the festival. WTF?

Shortly after the "accident," a man was arrested for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk ... and falsely told police he was Captain Briggs. This caused Captain Briggs much annoyance. (Annoyance that he might be discovered???)

It seems like he's having a lot of "accidents" with animals while he's motoring about.
