What is your favorite space 4X game?

Postby DoomYoshi on Mon Dec 15, 2014 5:11 pm

I'm just wondering what some good ones might be. My faves for a long time were Alpha Centauri and Masters of Orion.

Now that I'm in the 21st century, I am ready to try some new ones.

I've already played Galactic Civilizations II. I like it, but the ship design is beyond me, since I am effectively a casual gamer (except in fighting games). I also have Sword of the Stars II.

So far, I've liked Galactic Civ 2. But it was a game I played, and then kind of just wasn't interested in anymore. I hear Galactic Civ 3 has potential. I also hear "Distant Universe" is supposed to be pretty good -- but I haven't played it. I've also played Endless Space, but it was less interesting than Galactic Civ 2.

I like the Star Wars one, but it may not be what you're looking for - Star Wars: Empire at War. It is an RTS game, but it has 4X type elements to it. I loved it.

More similar to the Star Wars one than a true 4x, Sins of a Solar Empire was alright. Other than that, my only recommendations would be MOO2 and Galactic Civs 2, but you've already played them, so...

Has anyone tried Civ: BE? I've heard mixed things (mostly that it has the same problems Civ V had) but I'd still be interested if someone else gave it some good press.

I haven't yet, but I suspect I'll eventually pick it up a year from now on a random steam sale for like 15-20 bucks. Most of the reviews I read liked it, but it felt a little too much like a Civ 5 skin with some new elements.

What problems does Civ 5 have?

Well, to start, it isn't Civ IV.

The biggest complaint was one unit per tile.

I'll admit that overall the features of Civ IV (w/ Warlord and BtS) plus Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn made Civ IV superior to Civ V. The tech tree, range of different units, etc. etc. was awesome.

What made Civ IV boring was unit-stacking and crap AI that still didn't know how to handle efficient unit-stacking and city attacks. At least with Civ V, you gotta plan attacks more carefully and more shit can go wrong (e.g. the front line collapsing; horses amazingly matter; more promotions have greater benefits and costs, etc.). The Civ V AI has pulled some interesting moves against me, while Civ IV AI is predictable.

So, I can understand that the unit-stackers would dislike more difficult AI and making harder decisions, but boo hoo.

I'm just waiting for some badass Civ V mods.

I like Civ V more than Civ IV but without Leonard Nimoy it's impossible to conclude that it's a better game.

I don't disagree with that.

I like Civ IV better, but that probably has more to do with the "Golden Age of thegreekdog Playing Videogames" than anything else. I got Civ V when I was married and had a job... not as much opportunity for immersion. Civ V is loaded on my PC, so maybe I'll go back to it.

That'll do it. It's been about 6 months since I've seriously played a game. In hindsight, I'm not missing it (that much).

Can we do that? If so, I'd be in.

We can. Easiest would be if everyone is on Steam.

My comment about Civ V pertained to it not being good without the DLC (though I'd say it didn't have problems before).

I'd be up for a CC Civ game.

Don't worry. I played Dungeon Keeper (w/ KeeperFX mod) for about 20 hours this week. It was fun, but I ran into the same problems that I always have with video games: "what are you doing with your life, sir?" Uh, uh, having fun? "Aren't you wasting your intellectual talent? Isn't there more important shit to be tackling in this world?" Oh, right! <quits and deletes game>.
