Steam is the easiest (provided that's where you got Skyrim), as you press the "Subscribe" button for the mod you want, and it's installed that easily.
The other big mod place is Nexus. It's a bit more complex, as you install the mod manager, but the manager will keep the mods in the order you need them to be 99 out of 100 times. And the mods on nexus are more in depth, bigger, and more immersive. There are tutorials for it (and it is free, despite whatever you may have heard).
For mods, well for one, I recommend some face mods, as let's face it, a lot of people in Skyrim are pretty damn ugly.
Next would be CBBE body mod, as it adjusts the body more to your preferences.
Now for the big ones. SKSE and SkyUI. SKSE requires you to download it manually, but first you need SkyUI. SkyUI makes the menu system better and allows for easier use of immersive mods. SKSE allows for other mods that go in and add stuff not normally in the game. There are tutorials to install.
Another one, which is practically a must, is the lock pick mod, where it shows the area where you need to unlock the thing your lockpicking. Why is it a must? Well, on the console version, the controller will vibrate when lockpicking, giving you a good idea of where the lockpick needs to be. You don't get that on the PC.
Some good follower mods are include Sofia, who is rude, crude, and pretty funny. Vilja, who has quite a large personal quest, and a few others.
A good hair mod is Apachii Sky Hair, giving you a ton more hair designs to work with.
There are also race mods, with some of the most popular being the Epic Elves mod and the Temptress Race mods.
Weapon mods, well, some are only a single weapon, some add weapons to every smithing level (iron, steel, elven, etc).
Armor mods are similar, and what I recommend is just going through the mods lists and see what you like.
"Eh, whatever."
