he's trying to break the sound barrier via falling? isn't there a terminal velocity in play somewhere?

Yeah, that's the plan. I don't know the details but perhaps him taking an aerodynamic shape and the rarefied atmosphere up there might help.

true... less atmosphere = less drag so at damn near no atmosphere he could get going pretty damn fast
