Seminoles pull it out

#1 Alabama plays Virginia Tech and ranked contenders
Georgia vs Clemson and LSU vs TCU Saturday.

Otherwise most of the challenges are slim to start.

Mississippi scores a late TD and holds on to beat Vandy,
and North Dakota State upsets Kansas State
with an 80 yard drive eating up 8:30 on the clock
and scoring a TD with 28 secs remaining.

What about the shoot out between Fresno and Rutgers? Ended in OT when Rutgers failed a 2 point conversion attempt.

Nice to see you calling out Michigan. Overrated year after year, fail to capitalize despite so many recruits and resources at their disposal, and yet continuously fail to deliver year after year.

So A&M looked like they should have on offense but a bit weak on defense.

muy thai is just silly... Woverines have been a non factor lately,
but the Big Blue is one of most storied programs in football.

In a game with 4 fourth quarter lead changes, Vandy scored
with at about 1:26 to play and Ol' Miss answered to win.

Meanwhile Temple's coaching staff has balls the size of peas
in their approach to a game at Notre Dame.

Home field certainly has it's advantages... Toledo moved the ball
well at Florida. One drive stalled when a receiver was tackled
on the mid field sideline, the Gator defender who made the play
then knocks the guy's helmet off out of bounds after the whistle.
The receiver gives him a shove and is called for unsportsmanlike
conduct. How does the referee overlook the helmet flying off
when he was standing right there. Should have been nullifying
penalties at a t least and not a drive killing 15 yarder.

Early 2nd Quarter, VaTech has twice the total yardage and
'Bama has a mere 4 1st downs, but lead by two TDs.

So...Georgia's offensive play calling in this game was horrible and Murray looked like a red shirt freshman half the time Too many delay of games or close to delay of games and a few botched hand offs as well (Watch one play where the offensive line starts blocking one way and the running back starts running that same way but Murray tries to hand it off the other way). This is not to mention he has very little sense of pressure coming at him. None if it's coming from behind him. Our defense was pretty much what everyone thought it would look like. Talented but a bit green. Have high hopes for them as they get more settled into the system whether it's this year or next. Of course the game could have gone very differently. some moments that caught my eye.

1. Aaron Murray's fumble in the 2nd quarter. He was right there, even the first to fall on it but failed to tuck it beneath him and Clemson came up with it and got the short field touch down.

2. Aaron Murray's interception towards the end of the first half. This I'm blaming as much as the play calling. We didn't need to go for the big play here. Play it safe, run the ball, go for the pass if it's 3rd and long (a safer pass). As long as you don't fumble and don't lose yards, you are in field goal range (a bit long but still field goal range).

3. The high snap on the field goal attempt: This one simply couldn't be helped.

4. Clemson receivers bobbled catch for first down. This one's a little less clear as I never got a good view of the replay. It had been third down when he caught it but it looked like the receiver may have been bobbling the ball as he headed out of bounds. It was ruled a catch and Clemson quick snapped before the play could be reviewed. They went on to score on that drive.

5. Less definably but probably most problematic were the penalties. Georgia as always got too many penalties.

Either way, it was fairly well played over all congrats Clemson.

An awesome opening game played by two well matched teams.
It's a shame the difference on the scoreboard was provided
by the high snap on a short field goal attempt by Georgia.

Listening to Brett Mussburger in the booth is cruel and unusual
punishment for anyone who loves the game. If I had to hear him
say "dawgs" a few more times I'd probably jump off the roof.

Wyoming certainly made Nebraska sweat as a lot of under dogs
played big today. Looking in on Notre Dame playing Temple I don't
expect them to be a lame duck title game participant again to
finish this year.

Honestly, we lost insteado Nebraska winning. Over 600 yards of total offense, Smith with over 350yds passing along with 4 TDs and almost another 100 on the ground, along with over 200 yards rushing. But some costly mistakes though.

Record crowd of 91,000 people, and Pokes were not intimidated at all. Until the stream I was watching disconnected (for whatever reason), the Poke's offense just gashed the Huskers on the ground and shredded them through the air (supposedly Nebraska's strong point). And to think we were 30 point underdogs and a couple of things go differently, hell, 1 thing go differently, we topple the #18 ranked team in the nation.

The announcers were bugging me in this game. Mostly the comment when a Georgia player went down, obviously in pain if not injured (I think he did return to play a few plays later, it had looked like he banged his elbow which is painful but usually not serious) and the commenter started talking about how DCs teaching players to fake injuries. It got on my nerves because the passive implication was that the player who was hurt was faking the injury to slow Clemson down.

On their home field too.

And a record crowd of over 91,000 people.

We lost more than they won, and it feels like it. And in the article I read in the paper this morning, the players, especially Brett Smith knew they could win, but just couldn't pull it out. And Smith hates losing. He has no fear of other team's defenses and what not and has the skill to back it up. But he became the hero of a bunch of little kids in red and earned the respect of a lot of Huskers (except for the trolls, and not a whole lot you can do about those).

In other MWC news:

SDSU back to losing to FCS schools, by 3 scores this time.

BSU forgot what offense was and ran into a buzzsaw that is Washington.

Air Force won after a slow start but the second half ran away with it.

UNM lost. Considering who they had for 3 years, that's going to take some time.

UNR got ran over by UCLA.

SJSU won, but there are concerns about offense (star QB only had a 50% completion and slightly over 200 yards passing).

Fresno won, Carr is great, but their defense has a lot of questions, and they have no run game.

USU has Chuckie Keeton, but when he went down with cramps against Utah, the offense sputtered and died.

Hawaii played pretty good defense, but an abysmal offense led by an imcompetant QB doomed them against USC.

UNLV is a basketball school and it showed against Minnesota.

CSU plays today against CU.

LSU has it's typically tough ranked schedule, while #1 Alabama
has only one preseason top ranked team on their schedule.

Notre Dame is the AP darling of over ratedness year in and out
as people are forever hopeful they will return to past glories.
Last year was totally pathetic as they shouldn't have been ranked
in the Top 10 or playing Alabama for the BCS Championship.

And hopefully MICHIGAN smacks them down a rung or two next week.

Don't get me wrong, I love to see big --and little-- football programs do well, just don't place any team on a pedestal before they've earned it. Team rosters evolve year after year and their history doesn't win games.

Michigan & ND have both been through tough times recently and I fully expect both to return to top form. But a little patience is appreciated while they put the pieces back together.

Alabama's schedule isn't looking that tough other than LSU and Texas A&M. Their non-conference schedule is pretty weak, other than A&M. Colorado State? Georgia State? But it's been like that for a long time. It's a good thing they don't have Florida, Georgia, or South Carolina on their schedule this year. Alabama definitely has the weakest schedule of anybody in the SEC this year.

Texas A&M is now a member of the SEC. Their non-con schedule is Va Tech, Colorado State, Georgia State, and Chattanooga.

Alabama & Ohio State both have softer initial schedules
than Oregon, LSU, A&M and even Michigan, which leaves
some wiggle room for climbing the Ranks.

Of course all the top ranked teams hold their own fates
in their hands and merely need to win eh?

Alabama is consistently good (and the sheep are going to get turned into lamb chops there), the rest of the SEC, I don't know.

In other news, Wyoming is ranked in the top 10 for total offense in the NCAA, and Smith outshone Heisman candidate Martinez big time. Running or throwing, it went hands down to Smith.

388 yards throwing, 90+ yards rushing, 4 TDs.

Martinez-
155 yards throwing, 70 yards rushing, 3 TDs.

Other than a few trolls, the consensus on Smith is that he is a beast.
