Most songs have 1 or 2 musical progressions - If you look at the Beatles (especially after the early pop stuff) - you'll see 3 to 8 musical progressions in each song. They all could write and play and they made a lot of great songs that are still played to this day. The songs hold up even though the technology they used is nothing like the technology of today. To compare them to the Back Street Boys makes me cringe. There's never been a more talented and accomplished band in the history of rock n' roll and their songs covered the gamet of human emotions and introspection while rocking out.

BTW - 'Imagine' is not a Beatles song, it's a John Lennon (solo) song.

Oh and Pedro - all your badgering me about terrible music taste meant nothing before, but it especially means nothing in light of your utter disrespect for a band that is better than any artist you'll ever honor.

WHOA WHOA WHOA

The Backstreet Boys are an *amazingly accomplished and musically-sound act. This is despite their two handicaps, which are not writing music/playing instruments(being a band) and Kevin Richardson. **They are arguably the greatest barber-shoppish band of all time.

* "The band has sold over 130 million records worldwide, making them one of the biggest selling groups of all time. According to Billboard, they are the first group since Sade to have their first seven albums reach the top 10 on the chart."

**Juan_Bottom won first place in Illinois State singing competition at the age of 14, with his group "Pie After Friday." Yes, it was barber-shoppy.

I simply find the Beatles utterly overrated. They are not the greatest rock band of all time. I would argue they don't even qualify as rock. They are a pop act in the vein of Michael Jackson or Elton John.

I will say that I saw Paul McCartney play in Philadelphia (the Beatles are mrs. thegreekdog's favorite band) and it was an excellent show.

Mrs greekdog has excellent taste.

Per the rest... I wonder how many groups will still be discussed 50 years down the road. It is not the present that gets to judge greatness, it is the future.

It's easy to forget Shakespeare was the bawdy naer' do well of his time, not the hoity-toity scholar he is currently seen to be.

Me... I just like their music.

I used to hate the Beatles and I thought they were the most over-rated band ever. I saw the images of girls screaming at them at the Ed Sullivan Show and I was like what's the big deal? Perhaps they are the victims of their own over-hype though. When I finally got over my long bias and started listening to the songs, I was amazed at how innovative they really were.

As for the pop vs. rock. I can see where you're coming from, from a sound standpoint. Most of there stuff isn't Led Zeppelin, Jimmi Hendrix or Pink Floyd or whatever; but they had the talent to play any style. At the end of the day, they used the full range of instrumentation, including keyboards and acoustic guitars (which lend itself more to pop/ligher rock than rock). They wrote music that they wanted to listen to. They didn't care if they had a rock edge and they were more than happy to not be type cast into having to produce a certain genre of music.

I'm not saying the Beatles are my favorite. I am saying I regard them as the most talented band in the history of rock.

Funny... I have more than once wondered if Queen would someday wind up being considered the greatest band of our time.

The song writing probably could have been better (it's pretty straight ahead rock and lyrics), but they are some of the best musicians and singers I've ever heard. We actually sang Queen songs in elementary school music class (no, not Fat Bottomed Girls).

I'm completely familiar with Queen. I bought their 2 hits CDs back in the day. Tool doesn't belong in the same breath with the Beatles. You might as well start comparing them to Nine Inch Nails and the Dixie Chicks too if you're going to do that

Was that "Tool" or "Tull?". I have never heard of "Tool". Tull.. would be debateable, but I can understand thinking he is a great musician.

Can I get some suggestions for musicians better than, or more deserving than the Beatles who also produced music at the same time?

I was working in the warehouse at work a few Saturdays back and was listening to a program that's been going for years 'pick of the pops' they cover the charts as they were for that week but chose a random year. they had 1965 as the chosen year and ended up listening to track after track that was a stone cold classic track. Everything from the sixties was good. it wasn't the beatles that were good, it was the decade.

"Back in the day" classic comedy!

Back in the day you would have listened to "We will rock you/we are the champions" On a vinyl record played on the juke box in the arcade or AM radio which was mono.

I would have to agree about the Beatles being overrated and Queen being superior in nearly every aspect.

AT ANY RATE, the first post is pretty eerie.

??????????????????????????

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS

"To date there have been 345 individuals inducted into the Song Writing Hall Of Fame, with the British rock band Queen and the American bands, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Bon Jovi being the only bands [2] (rather than an individual) to ever be inducted into the hall of fame."

I think Mercury and May are two of the top 5 songwriters of all time.

I'm sorry, but just because the Beatles were FIRST doesn't mean they were the BEST.

The Beatles are my number 5, but I have Queen (ofc), Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Radiohead (currently my favorite band) ahead of them.

See this is why you don't like the beatles, you're looking for something completely different out of your music than what the Beatles delivered. Tool is about the most opposite music to the Beatles on Earth. Tool writes complex, un- relateable songs (un-relateabe songs unless you do shrooms once a month) The beatles wrote simple sentimental songs. You think the beatles are over rated because it's not what you like, but most people just want a nice tune with words they'll remember.

(also I should mention that I don't think the Beatles were particularly talented in a technicality sort of way but more fall into the creative genius sort of catagory. They knew how to put together a good song with out using a 4/5 time signature where the vocals are timed to the Fibonacci sequence.)

I don't think the Beatles write simple songs. I think the Beatles are overrated. I listen to the Beatles occasionally, but I do not think they are the greatest rock band of all time. I think they are the most popular rock band of all time. Popularity does not equal greatness.

Beyond that, I like a lot of different types of music within the genre of "rock." So while Tool and Queen are my favorite bands, I also enjoy other, more "sentimental" music as well.

Did a search, I now see the problem. Tool was formed in 1990. I was literally out to sea, with no access to radio, most of that decade. And since... I have not been buying music except for my kids.
