Time to finish this list. Still ranked in order from best to worst for the year.
Also, I did this entire list (almost 50 movies) and didn't pirate a single movie. The few pirated movies I watched this year aren't included.
Finally, there are still quite a few more from 2012 that I didn't get a chance to see, and some that I don't want to. I may add a few more to the list, or shuffle stuff around in the coming years.
The Raid: Redemption
Unless you are a dyslexic and can't read subtitles - go see this f'ing movie. Not only the best Kung Fu Movie I have seen in a long time, but also the best Action movie I have seen in a long time. (technically released before 2012, but I am talking NA box office)
Skyfall Not the greatest Bond ever, but as a fanboy, I'm allowed to put this up here.
Secret World of Arriety
Apparently it's still in theatres, but you can probably catch it on DVD. A good, slow family film for a lazy day. (technically released before 2012, but I am talking NA box office)
Lawless
Jessica Chastain naked? Check. Tom Hardy without a face mask? Check. Historical drama with plenty of action, and a bit of comedy? Check. A+ movie.
Cabin in the Woods
Downright hilarious at times, an incredible storyline/concept. I can't wait for the videogame.
Django Unchained
A great movie. Go see it.
Killer Joe
It hurts to put this movie not at number one. It really was one of the best movies of the year, and I love Juno Temple and how perfect she was for the movie. I never saw the play, but now I want to.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Considering the trepidation I went into this movie with, I was quite surprised by how well it turned out.
Silver Linings Playbook
In a year known as the "death of the romcom" this great piece comes out. I don't think it will, but I am rooting for it at the Oscars.
The Avengers
Actually amazing. Gave me some renewed faith in the big-budget superhero comic book genre.
The Invisible War
Easily the best documentary of the year, and probably the best since Food Inc.
Chronicle
As someone who hates "found footage", this movie made me a believer. An amazing sci-fi story that I was depressed when it was over. My only criticism is that it was too short.
Killing Them Softly
Described by my aunt as the most depressing movie ever, worse than No Country for Old Men. I don't care, this is neo-noir almost at its finest.
John Carter
Underperformer of the year. Disney spent 400 million making it, but only made 200 million back. I want this to succeed because I love the books, and I want the rest of them to be made (I already got ripped off with The Last Airbender).
21 Jump Street
I agree with whitestazn, it was hilarious. Not a good action movie though, the action served mainly to serve up punch lines (a la Roger Moore as 007).
The Five-Year Engagement
The second rom-com that I thought was really well done this year. Genuinely funny, although a bit slow. A spiderman villain makes a good cuckold.
Battleship
A great movie. It reminds me of The Mummy or Armaggedon, which are 2 classics that I watched 100 times. If this came out 10-15 years ago, I would have watched it 100 times. Yes, the premise sucks, but so does your mom.
Hunger Games
Good movie.
Dark Knight Rises
Not as good as the first one. Suitably epic, but the trailer was actually more epic than the movie it seemed. Still, it should be seen to complete the trilogy, as an anthropological expedition, if for no other reason. (Anne Hathaway in a leather suit)
Life of Pi
One of two movies this year in which Irrfan Khan says the name "Richard Parker" which is the name of another character in the movie. You get bonus points if you guess the other one.
Wanderlust
Not sure if it qualifies as a rom-com, but if it does, it takes third place. Hilarious. Watch it high (or drunk) for maximum effect.
Rampart
A thoroughly wretched character study. A classic, which will probably never be realized as such.
The Amazing Spider Man
Honestly, the 25 min version was fine to watch. The retelling of the origin story in exactly the same way was a waste of movie time. It wasn't poorly executed though.
Prometheus
Alien doesn't hold any special place in my heart (I've never seen it) so I went into this movie pretty neutral, expecting a pretty scifi. I came out the same way.
Arbitrage
Actually a really good movie. The quality of other titles has pushed this one down.
Magic Mike
Haven't you always wanted to see Kevin Nash strip for you? Actually, he dances less than some of the others, and I was amazed at McConnaughy's performance, but not the best movie I saw all year or anything.
Woman in Black
A fun little movie. See it with kids who will likely be scared and scream and you will have an amazing time.
Coriolanus
Could've been better. Jessica Chastain (I love her) made this even more worthwhile as a great star-studded cast did one of Shakespeare's lesser known works on the evils of democracy.
Footnote
A high quality "academic" introspective. Not for everyone, but as an academic introvert, I enjoyed the movie.
American Reunion
On the new plot/reminiscence scale it leaned towards the reminiscence. Make sure to watch American Pie again if you haven't seen it a while. You can skip Pie 2 and Wedding and all the spinoffs.
Men In Black III
Josh Brolin made this movie. Other than that, it wasn't a bad movie, but unless you are a comic book fan, there isn't any pressing need to add this to your list.
Three Stooges
Good enough; I am a huge fan of clown. It wasn't the best stooges skits I have ever seen but the performances are good enough. Only reasons it is so low on the list: There are better movies and the 3 stooges are Jews (so they shouldn't be at a Catholic orphanage).
Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Very Interesting, but it ran a bit long, and I wanted more of the last couple years of his life.
Mirror Mirror
Better than expected; you won't regret seeing it, but there are so many better choices out there right now.
The Lorax
Not terrible, but not great. Worse than Mirror Mirror (I say this as a man too, not a little girl which is the target audience).
Taken 2
An unsurprising and uninspiring action movie. If I was a kid, I would have liked this a lot more, as it reminds me of my favourite movies from the 90s.
Chernobyl Diaries
I saw this as the last movie of a Dusk Till Dawn at the Drive In. I wish I would've driven over to the other screen that was playing Pirahna 3DD. A poor example of what found footage can do.
Man With the Iron Fists
Batista plays Brass Body - a warrior whose body is made of brass. 'Nuff said? Actually, the whorehouse is pretty sexy.
Marley
Way too long, and not very interesting subject matter. Shows the strength of good medical advice though.
That's My Boy
Considering the premise and where this movie was ending, it did pretty well. Aiming at the leftover puke in the toilet isn't exactly a noble goal though.
Contraband
Marky mark and his funky bunch do some things with a painting. Pew pew. Punch ker-POW.
The Raven
Strictly worse than the mafia game based on another dark author.
Total Recall
Down here we enter the dredges. Without the Johnny Cab, and with ugly CGI and terrible cinematography, there is no reason to see this. Unless you don't like good movies.
Lockout
Boring. In general, I hate CG and this had way too much. Some pretty funny quips didn't save the movie.
What to Expect When You're Expecting
The fact that this scores lower than Adam Sandler should tell you something of the quality and execution of this movie.
Wrath of the Titans
I fell asleep. It sucked. Didn't even have Bubo in it.
Safe
I also fell asleep. Probably cuz it was late, but still.
The Dictator
Yuck. I loved Borat, so it's not that I don't understand his humor... this movie was just awful.
