You can start with travel. Detroit is located in the Eastern Time Zone, and in the Eastern half of the country. The miles flown will be much fewer for the Red Wings being located in the East. Continue looking at travel, and you'll reach the "leaving the time zone" argument. It is easier to travel within your time zone than it is to fly across several. You look at the Wings in the playoffs, and they are frequently traveling to the west coast. That amount of travel takes it's toll on a team. You don't think Pittsburgh has it easier when they have to travel to, say, Buffalo, New York, then Philly, as opposed to Detroit flying to Vancouver, Phoenix then Anaheim?
Also, it's more natural for the Wings to be in the east. The majority of their traditional rivals are in the east. I'd explain further, but I have to go to work. Bye for now!
Bollocks.
