To answer your question, if I haven't already,(you read the whole thread, right?)it's not seeing vets or retired firemen that causes me to feel negatively. It's the expectation of special treatment and/or respect. Most of these people are already compensated for what they've done and aren't necessarily respectable.
For some fucked up reason in this country, being a vet is viewed by many as an automatic badge of honor. It's a little perverse.

Well, here is a list of current benefits. Remember that most solderers have dependents, next of kin.

Death Gratuity of $100K
Death Pension (you have to be well under the poverty line for this to kick in)
TRICARE (pretty crappy)
Basic Allowance for Housing (one year but at least they don't kick you off the base right away)

Trust me, to a wife and newborn son, this is an insult.

I was going to bow out of this one but you're killing me here.

First you can't tell who has returned from country with mud made from a mix of dessert sand that gets in absolutely everything and his best friend's brain, blood and fluids that are outside the friend thanks to a successful IED. Or the guy you are talking about that was bored out of his mind in camp because there were not enough latrines to dig.

Second just because a soldier ate sand instead of mud in Vietnam, or the soapstone from Ypres etc.. Does not give you the right to decide his sacrifice was less than the other soldier.

It's like the free breakfast for kids at my son's school. My son eats it sometimes even though we can afford to make food at home. Not just because I'm a free loader but so it is normal to eat free breakfast at school instead of that thing poor kids have to do. If you single out guys for serving based on them meeting you standards it becomes embarrassing. They sometimes already feel bad for seeing action. They did not always choose to go out on the wrong day. I personally thank them all for being prepared to.

I will thank every slacker, faker or even deserter to make sure when there is a Veteran deserving my respect, gratitude and thanks for his or her sacrifice, given so I can live in this region and complain because they raised the tax on cheese and beer, instead of living in a place that does not have affordable beer and cheese for all, because it's too dangerous to set up a stand.

I don't miss him or have to get him to fill out a short survey to qualify for a thank you.

I'll thank the cook, latrine digger, and other assorted "Field Engineer" corps because without him the soldier does not get a proper meal, dry place to sleep etc. after he returns to base and cleans up.

Sure it does. I can safely assume that a modern vet went into action(or most likely, inaction) with a fairly high chance of coming back home unscathed. I can also safely assume they went under their own accord. Shouldn't motivation be considered in all this? From those who I know are military, most get into it for the "wrong" reasons by most rational standards.

Even assuming the spouse of the soldier didn't work while the soldier was still alive and now needs to find their own employment, you're talking about giving them enough money to completely support them for several years while they look for a job. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Since when did fighting in the Middle East or Asia help to ensure American people's domestic freedoms? The US may well be (mostly) stable and safe, but that has nothing to do with its foreign military engagements.
