Sergeant York is a great movie, not just a great war movie.

Voted for Bridge over the river kwai. But Empire of the Sun would be my favorite I think.

Deserved mentions from previous posters for Enemy at the Gates, Das Boot and Downfall.

Where's the Great Escape on the poll (or even Escape to Victory :) ). Also Schindler's List?

For WW1 films well I'd have to say "The Battleshipotemkin"

I've heard good things about "Come and See" a German? film about the East front - anyone seen it? Is it worth a watch?

Private Ryan is not a great film, it has 20 minutes of excellent special effects and then just plods along to an obvious conclusion. It also suffers from the terrible Hollywood syndrome of making it look like only the yanks were fighting in Normandy, barely a Brit,Canuck or Aussie is sighted or mentioned all the way through. Voted for River Kwai but would give honourable mentions to The Great Escape,Bridge too far and Kellys Heroes. The really great war films for me were those that targeted Vietnam with the likes of Appocalypse now,Deerhunter,Platoon,Full metal jacket,Born 4th July amongst an outstanding crop.

The list should be changed...

Postby PopeyeDoyle on Tue Sep 25, 2007 8:46 am

Theres a new WW2 movie out called "Days of Glory". Well worth seeing...
http://www.daysofglorythefilm.com/

I voted for Paths Of Glory here because it shows how stupid and cowardly Generals are while the poor unknown soldiers do the fighting. The heart and soul.

Also..why no mention of "Das Boot" in the list? or "Letters from Iwo Jima"?

Is that a.k.a IndigĆØnes?

Looks very interesting. My wifes dad was in a similar situation (though post WW2 in the Algerian conflict).

Postby taranwandrer on Tue Sep 25, 2007 10:42 am

enemy at the gates and others i listed on one of my posts for just running out of room.
the new condensed list will have those next week and we will have a better look at this.

THE GREAT ESCAPE is more of a prison movie than a war film
SCHINDLERS LIST i covered...there are movies that take place during wars that ARENT war films...that was about human suffering and evil....and more a drama than war film....

so thats why.

Oh, I guess DOWNFALL is, too.

But you must understand, those elements are part and parcel of war. War has never existed without suffering off the battlefield, as well.

No, definitely, definitely not German, but Belarussian, made circa 1988, so USSR. For no good reason other than that I had these prepared for the "Guess The Movie From The Screenshot" thread - and no-one got it - here are a couple of screenshots. And yes, it is very definitely worth a watch. It is about the fast and brutal disillusionment of a Belarussian boy who, initially over-eagerly, joins the Soviet partisans.

I'll confess I've not seen nearly all of those films, but I'm surprised "All quiet on the western front" hasn't received more votes. Because it's not just a good film, it's fucking great!

Also I'm somewhat surprised a pure entertainment production like Ryan gets that many votes. It's to war films what "Day after tomorrow" is to catastrophe movies. Something to watch and quite possibly laugh at, but nothing you could ever take seriously. It's as if people go "Yay! It's got explosions and famous people in it, it must be good!". Oh, well, I guess that's todays children for you, if it doesn't go well with popcorn and you can't download the soundtrack it isn't even worth watching.

Enemy at the Gates was a great WWII movie. A movie I enjoyed that doesn't get a lot of attention is To End All Wars with Keifer Sutherland.

Eurgh! Ignoring the irrelevance of that film to this thread, how can anyone sit through that? After 45 minutes, I was screaming "For Christ's sake, just shag each other and be done with it!!"
