Furthermore, I have a theory that the most recent mass extinction is a result of this incredible diversification, since it corresponded with the time that mammal transposons were silenced.

A new study actually links schizophrenia to people who have no sense of smell, in that they are far more likely to develop the disease.

As far as asthma goes. I had it very bad as a child. I was told I would never run or play sports. My parents enrolled me in swim classes, and I swear I swam the disease out of me. Since high school, Ive never had any symptoms since, and in my age bracket, I'm pretty damn healthy, and not many would want to bike, swim or ski against me now. Maybe when I get older the symptoms will return, as they did for my maternal grandmother, but I can't fathom I am not fully cured of the disease.

I know people who had it at my age too, and I am astonished they still suffer. I chalk it up to luck, but I know the swimming was a catalyst, as well as a very active lifestyle in my college years.

Still can't run for a damn though. Its the only thing that still gets me winded.

This, as well as Fitz's theory are definitely up for debate in the causation vs. correlation department but hey, anything's possible. ;)

Oh, I fully agree and don't suggest any direct correlation, especially when there is only one test subject, but if you have asthma, or a child with asthma, I think getting them to swim as much as possible, taking all safety precautions of course, would at worst, make them good swimmers, and if any benefit was attained, all the better.

It would be pretty interesting if they could test this. We're the swim classes indoors? I wonder if the humidity helped. It would definitely keep dust and other airborne irritants to a minimum.

You know, this could be related to the fact that you became more active in a general way it seems, ever after you started taking swimming lessons. Being physically active tends to boost one's immune system as well as providing many other health benefits. It could be that your body just became better equipped at fighting off whatever was aggravating it and has stayed that way ever since. :)

I have a theory that
when the amount of dead people on facebook exceeds the number of living people on Facebook,
the singularity will be achieved.

I think old Nick looks more like that Philip Seymour Hoffman guy now.

Untested theories:

The Universe is rational - not real - and only extends to aleph null in any one space/time dimension. The lack of "irrational space" that is to say the space between two rational points (remember numbers like PI are irrational and cannot be expressed as a ratio) is the fundamental driver in quantum mechanics.

Much like the notion of the wave/particle duality of matter, there exists another completely opposite way of viewing space/time that can impose results that might seem odd when viewed from a space/time perspective only. I have no idea what it is, but I'm convinced that it exists.

Minus infinity is actually positive infinity and even the open universe is, technically speaking, closed (albeit infinitely).

Here's a pet theory of mine.

The universe is much smaller than we think, and is not really expanding. Dark matter exerts drag on photons, and this is the true reason for the red shift of light from distant sources.

I question the possibility of the red shift being some odd result as opposed to the doppler effect as well.

Not entirely unproven.

The key is actually excercise and multiple associations with diverse people. Some debate over whether outdoor excercise, in particular, is key or just excercise in general. Those who do that (eating correctly abd drinking enough water don't hurt, either) are far more likely to be healthy than those who don't.

From what I have been told, swimming, in particular is reccommended excercise because it encourages "correct" breathing.
I am not so sure about the dust bit. Dust may be a minimum, but the chlorine or other chemicals are irritants, plus if the pool is indoors, then there is mold and mildew issues (or in indoor portions, i.e. changing rooms of outdoor facilities.. even if "rooms" are boxes open to the sky)

I have a theory the Eastern Europe is totes awesome. It has yet to be disproven.

I also have theory that the Cold war artificially created a global two tiere economy which was partially sheltered from each other.

With the end of the cold war this seperation was ended, and we are currently seeing a ballancing of the global economy. Wages in the west will fall due to competition in the east. wages in the east will rise as they become more prosperous, and eventually things will level out to an aproximate equality in wealth.

Unless we can generate another cold war.
