RPGs are only good for people that like to get into the role-playing. It's like reading a book, but you are the main character and the hero. When I play shooters, I don't let my mind wander and role-play that I'm the dude on the screen. Even when I play games like the Half Life games, I don't role-play. The character is given a personality by the game. But with RPGs, you can imagine the thoughts of the character...you have enough choice to form the personality of the character...you can become the character...or rather, you can make the character become yourself...

That's what I enjoy about RPG games.

I think I am in semi-agreement with Prowler. Creepy sounding sentence.

It's been a while since I remember the last role playing game I really enjoyed. The Sims?! Oregon Trail 2?! Ha, in very limited role playing-adventure gaming ways. Maybe King's Quest of ancient yore? My eclectic mix of games I own and still play are mostly oldies from the early 2000's to the 90's.

...

But again...modern RPG's aren't true RPG's. If you don't like the slower paced RPG's, go play an action game. There are plenty of those out there. I don't see why those of us that prefer true RPG's have to get shafted just so the rest of you people can have another fucking action/adventure game.

FFS, the gaming industry is going downhill. I think I'm losing my faith in humanity. (Ha, like there was any left...)

You know, I think I said the same thing when Adventure Games started to go away. One of all time favorite games still is the Secret of Monkey Island and the immediate follow-up LeChuck's Revenge, before the series got taken over as was remastered.

Yeah... I loved those games--even Diablo because playing with friends is so much better than running around by yourself. I'll make an exception for Fallout and Fallout 2 though.

Also, MMORPGs are lame. They typically replace the story, good gameplay, and interesting characters with a shell of a game plus an abundant amount of Serious Business players. Even trolling them gets old.

I have never played an MMORPG that I liked (to be honest, I haven't played many - pretty much Star Wars Galaxies and that weird super hero one).

I liked the D&D games because there was a good story and you could explore. The Elder Scrolls games are similar, except I think they want to put so much in the game, it takes away from the originality and story (at least in the pre-Skyrim games).

I played 1 mmorpg back in the day with some friends of mine. However, I encountered 1 person who was actually role playing, and it was pretty amusing. The rest of my time I spent becoming a massive billionaire and war profiteer, and pestering newbs with throw-away characters.

RPG's are dying because today's gamers don't like RPG's. They like action/adventure games, so that's what Bethesda is changing The Elder Scrolls into so they can make more money. It's not that they don't hold up today. They are still the same great games they used to be (the older one's, anyway). The newer one's aren't really RPG's, so that's not really a fair statement for you to make.

But to call Skyrim "not an RPG" isn't fair either. That's why some (myself included) make distinctions between the slower, turn-based RPGs (Final Fantasy) and the more modern form of the genre (Mass Effect, Skyrim). They're still leveling based games and rely to some extent on the allocation of points to skills, but they're faster paced and don't have enclosed encounters. "RPG" has always been a fairly broad term, so I guess in that sense no, my statement isn't completely fair. I stand by my opinion on FFVII.

Anywho, I finally broke into Skyrim. I've also broken into a lot of people's homes in Skyrim.

RPG's are dying because today's gamers don't like RPG's. They like action/adventure games, so that's what Bethesda is changing The Elder Scrolls into so they can make more money. It's not that they don't hold up today. They are still the same great games they used to be (the older one's, anyway). Anywho, I finally broke into Skyrim. I've also broken into a lot of people's homes in Skyrim.

I could get into this with you, but honestly, I'm tired of the debate. Suffice it to say, Skyrim is an RPG in the same way that God of War is a puzzle game. Sure, it has some of the elements, but the main gameplay is different. God of War is an action game, with mild puzzle elements. Skyrim is an action/adventure game, with mild RPG elements.

The game contains little to no depth. It's all about shiny new graphics and NPC AI. The earlier games focused on RPG gameplay, almost exclusively. The combat wasn't very good in those games. But they weren't combat games. They were RPG games that gave you the tools to play any role you could imagine in the gameworld. Skyrim has since removed most of those things, simplified (dumbdowned) the other elements, and made the combat better.

Now none of this is to say it's not a good game. It's probably a great game if you take it for what it is, an action/adventure game. But as an RPG, it's an abysmal failure.

Anyway, I probably will play it soon. My nephew is coming down for Christmas and he's bringing his xbox360, so I'll probably rent it so we can play it while he's here. But once he's gone, I'll happily go back to playing Morrowind.

I've just started the Oblivion mod The Heart of the Dead. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/V ... il&id=5139

I am the baddest badass warrior ever and I absolutely crush my enemies without even breaking a sweat. It wasn't always that way. So the fighting action is no longer as challenging or entertaining. But I enjoy the storyline of the game and the mods and I also role play by doing things like stocking my castles and houses up with weapon, armor, scroll, and potion caches to help protect Cyrodiil from any future threat. It sounds pretty lame, but for me it's like reading a book...and kinda writing parts of the book at the same time.

The only complaint I have of some of the mods is that they give you way too powerful weapons and/or armor. I just take those weapons and/or armor and put them on display in one of my castles or other houses.

I've been reading about a number of modifications out there (for the PC version). Any of you playing on PC, and if so, are you using any modifications?

I found this on YouTube's main page. I usually don't click on crap that YouTube tries to pawn off on the main page; but since I was playing Skyrim, it intrigued me (and I was well surprised!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr-buV4tYOA

I imagine the whole country singing this song to our newly elected president in 2012.

The Dragonborn Comes

Our hero, our hero, claims a warrior’s heart
I tell you, I tell you, the Dragonborn comes
With a Voice wielding power of the ancient Nord art
Believe, believe, the Dragonborn comes
It’s an end to the evil, of all Skyrim’s foes
Beware, beware, the Dragonborn comes
For the darkness has passed, and the legend yet grows
You’ll know, You’ll know the Dragonborn’s come

(Chorus in Draconic)

Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin, naal ok zin los vahriin,

Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal!

Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan,

Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal!

That is not the dragonborn, if he were there would be at least one FUS RO DAH clip with him on Youtube, but not a single such video could be found.

I've downloaded a few PC Mods, most aesthetic and ambiance sort of things, plus a couple of other mod tpyes. The Nexus Mod Manager makes installing the mods, and activating/deactivating them so easy---wish there was something like this for the games I played back in day!

Aesthetic Mods I've got running:
  • Skyrim Sunglare
  • Realistic Water Textures
  • Realistic Smoke and Embers
  • Nicer Snowflakes
  • Enhanced Blood Textures
  • Immersive Skyrim Thunder
  • Enhanced Night Skyrim
  • Ambient Seagulls
  • Maker's Mark Ingots

Gameplay/HUD Mods
  • Glowing Ore Veins
  • Arrowsmith
  • QD Inventory

=========================

I decided for my first character would be a playstyle that I usually rarely ever do for rpgs---a Ranger. Bows and Arrows only with lots of Sneaking.

I focused mostly on Destruction magic and lots of Sneaking with Lockpicking; however, Sneaking and Archery is a good choice. Using the bow in combination with sneaking is a good way to pick off enemies (also, the game is fun to just wander around aimlessly and hunt elk and stuff).

Re: Skyrim: Elder Scrolls V

Postby thegreekdog on Tue Dec 20, 2011 10:56 am

I have a few questions. I have the game on X-Box 360 rather than PC (I know, I'm a Phillistine). I'm trying to play as a mage/thief/assassin type character. I'm relying on destruction magic, sneaking, and the like. I do plan on reading some free online guides at some point, but I thought this might a good place to go as well. Anyway, my questions:

(1) For the main quest, are there time limits on when I have to do stuff? So, for example, I have to warn the Jarl of whatever about the dragon - do I have to do that in a certain number of days or can I do other shit and then go back and do that quest?

(2) What kind of armor can I wear while using magic? Right now I have light imperial armor, but I can afford upgraded stuff. Can I wear that and still have my offhand with the spells? My spells work with the imperial armor right now.

(3) I have a raise zombie spell, but it doesn't seem to work ever. Any ideas?

Thanks.
