Looks like BYU is trying to stab the MWC in the back by going Independent in football and WAC in all other sports. In return, the MWC has just extended invitations to Fresno State and UNR of the WAC (the last 2 "big dogs" of the WAC).
More to come most likely.
Optimist, if you're still around, what's your take on all this crap?
Here's one link on this.

I think the WAC had the most innovative system a few years ago, pre-MWC, when they were using the 4-team, 4-quadrant arrangement, with the quadrants rotating division every two years.
I'd warrant, within 2-years, the PAC 10 invites Air Force. The only thing holding them back to now are the faculties at Berkeley, Washington, UCLA, Oregon and Stanford libbing it up and not wanting a service academy in there. Utah and CU should tip the balance of votes.
And, realistically, now that C-USA and the Mountain West have been raped of all their money teams, why not combine all these mid-majors into one giant, 50-team junk conference? Roll Mid-America, C-USA, WAC, Sun Belt and Mountain West all together.

The WAC 16 was one of the worst blunders in college football. Rivalries were thrown out the window and travel was horrendus. That was why the Gang of 5 originally split off along with 3 other schools.
As it is right now though, BYU is looking to be pretty much screwed no matter what they do. The WAC is now a garbage heap and they pissed off the MWC with this move.

The various NCAA directors stabbed the Utahs, Boise States and BYU's of the world in the back when they created the BCS. College football is a mess. That is the real reason that the MWC, WAC struggle to remain relevant. I personally don't watch Bowl games any more (with some possible exceptions). I haven't watched the last three 'championship games.' I refuse to accept such gross corruption.

Responding directly to what I think BYU should do: I think they should go independent. They can't compete for a national championship in the MWC. I think they are usually more of a 2nd tier contender most years. But for those years in which they have a really good team, they don't have to get screwed by the system. Having a stronger schedule makes them more valid and helps them to get recruits. The recruit part of the equation is especially significant. The 'major conferences' knew that by declaring themselves to be 'major conferences' and thereby receive more consideration, that they would perpetuate the recruiting gap.

They haven't gone undefeated in quite awhile, and have never played in a major bowl (before and after the BCS came into being). Besides, according to one of the reports, BYU is doing this to spread the Mormon faith (on Yahoo, if I remember correctly). And until the MWC actually get AQ status (BYU doing this hurt a great deal, especially if they do go Indy) it will be hard even for Boise or TCU to get to the NCG if they go undefeated.

I love seeing UNR move to the MWC - great step for them.
I think this is a big mistaken on BYU's part, though they're probably doing it as a hopeful move into the PAC-10. I'd LOVE to see Air Force climb into the Pac-10, as Saxi mentioned...though sadly, I don't think there's ANY chance of that happening.

Well, UNR and Fresno both accepted. Now to hear the news on BYU. Who tried to stab the MWC in the back. Some of the conference members have been in the same conference for about 80 years. As you can imagine, there are a LOT of pissed of fans on the MWC board.

No, you are!
BTW, Wyoming has a freshman linebacker who just came here from Germany. Looks like he will be doing kick offs and be in the rotation for Middle Linebacker.

Actually German or just a U.S. military brat?

German. Name of Oliver Schober.
Update-A new rumor going around is that C-USA and the MWC will be having a CCG of sorts, where the 2 conference champs play a game against eachother for a BCS Bowl Bid.
What the hell? What has C-USA done?

I'll put 5-1 odds he doesn't go back, like other great athletes from that country such as Detlef Schrempf or Saxi Toxin.

Well that's interesting. That was among my mega-junk-conference ideas from above. Is the MWC reading Conquer Club?
Though, really, that seems like a decent idea. I'd expand it though where the two top teams from across the Sun Belt, WAC, MWC, MAC and C-USA played for a BCS spot.

The problem though, is that the MWC, with the addition of BSU, is the best league outside of the BCS AQ conferences, and even then, has beaten down the PAC time and again (Wyoming actually has a winning record against the SEC, 2 wins against Ole Miss and a huge upset at Tennessee with a loss to Florida and one other team). The WAC is looking to be finished, they are down to 6 members and Hawaii is thinking of going Indy, and other than LaTech (who could go to C-USA), the rest of the WAC is looking to go to the FCS most likely. The other non-aq conferences haven't had a single team finish in the top 25 (Houston is looking to be a 12th member of the MWC). Houston is about the only viable candidate out of the rest.

There are reports that Maryland and Rutgers will be bolting their respective conferences to join the Big Ten in a few years. The Big East continues to get decimated, and now the ACC is starting to look like it will need life support if some of their southern teams look to the SEC or Big 12.
Boise State and San Diego State, barely in the Big East, are also looking to move back to the Mountain West perhaps.

Well, Rutgers and Maryland will be joining the Big 10, UCF, Houston, and Navy are having second thoughts, and the SDSU fanbase (especially on AztecMesa) are lemmings following their AD and the Big Least, despite every team currently in that conference looking for a way out. These Aztec fans even think they, along with Boise State, could start up a brand new conference with teams as far away as Florida. Only problem is, is that they are the only ones who think it is possible.
