Imagine – Assimilation by the BORG

Note, one of the things that really grinds my gears is that fact that the whole song never rhymes.

Imagine there's no Heaven
No heaven, no happiness, no hope … no thanks.
It's easy if you try
Not thinking is easy, thinking is hard
No hell below us
No pain, no gain, right?
Above us only sky
In space, no one can hear you scream
Imagine all the people
Yes you BORG always want everyone don’t you
Living for today
No memories of the past, no hope for the future, just do your job now

Image

Imagine there's no countries
No families, no friends, no one to help
It isn't hard to do
Not thinking is easy when you have been assimiliated
Nothing to kill or die for
Yes you already killed off my friends and neighbours in my mind, who else can I die for?
And no religion too
Faith, hope and love; these things you have removed from me. And the greatest of those was love.
Imagine all the people
The collective?
Living life in peace
Being assimilated in the mind numbing BORG.

Image

You may say that I'm a dreamer
No you are the BORG
But I'm not the only one
No you are legion
I hope someday you'll join us
Assimilate THIS
And the world will be as one
Only over my dead body!

Imagine no possessions
No memoires either, right?
I wonder if you can
You will find a way
No need for greed or hunger
The BORG will provide
A brotherhood of man
BrOtheRhood … BOR …oh never mind.
Imagine all the people
Billions of enslaved assimilated people
Sharing all the world
You’ve already eliminated all associations, we not sharing, we are just no longer aware.

Image

You may say that I'm a dreamer
No you are the BORG
But I'm not the only one
No you are legion
I hope someday you'll join us
Assimilate THIS
And the world will be as one
Only over my dead body!

The only bit I had a problem with was "imagine no possessions" - this coming from a multi-millionaire.

LOL
I'm with Jones. That always bothers me!
But the rest of the song is beautiful.

It's the way of the future.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure it out to.

When he says
Imagine there's no countries
No families, no friends, no one to help

I want to raise my hand and say, "Well, countries aren't families, friends, and people to help, so how'd you get to this conclusion, buddy?" But I'd probably get something equally or even more irrational, followed by a slight headache, and the realization that I've wasted time and will waste more by responding back.

Why bother?

Oh, well, I'm terribly sorry about that mix-up. We'll pull your brother-in-law from the void of nothingness as soon as we can... *stamps your paper, then twiddles thumbs*

No families, no friends, no countries---no possessions. Maybe he's just talking about what he sees in afterlife as he knows it. :D

That's why he says "I wonder if you can" right after... because that's the hardest thing to imagine.

It's pretty easy (for me anyway, and probably for must of you reading this) to imagine a world with no religion, and no country. We may be evolving that way.

I don't know and can't truly imagine a world with no possessions.

Think about it... NO possessions.

You wouldn't say something like... "Um... where's my toothbrush dude? Who took my toothbrush." The word "my" doesn't exist in a world without possessions.

You may be right. Not having an imagination is not the same thing as not getting it.

I guess some people want to live in a J. Lennon world where everyone shares toothbrushes then?

The word "my" doesn't exist in a world without possessions.

Hey dude, are you just about finished with the condom? I get to use it next.

Where's the Preperation H? Nevermind I found it. Hmmmm the tip is still warm.

Is the song not about what the Beatles imagine (or wish) to be the perfect world? Or is it simply about imagination? If the latter, where's the "imagine if everyone had loads of money and hot chicks sat on our faces all day" kind of language?

Sharing everything would be kind of gross. As you can "imagine"..

I don't... and that's why we can't truly imagine (and hence will never have) a world with NO possessions.

I hear you on this one. I'll share most of my stuff but somethings are a little to personal. But hey if they want to share everything I'm supportive of them in that too.

No Beatle had to imagine that after about 1963.

Yes, but he was a Beatle in 1963 and not lacking for money or free sex thereafter.
Thus he didn't have to write about imagining that.

I agree! They were the Backstreet Boys of the 1960s.
