So apparently Netflix raised its prices.

And apparently people are outraged.

I'm not outraged. Should I be? Please explain why I should be outraged.

You "should" be outraged because it's "ridiculous" to raise prices in a "down economy".

You should not be outraged because their prices were artificially low (the content holders had undervalued streaming rights, and Netflix was able to give users streaming access for a much lower price than the marketplace demands).

I'm not upset. I knew this day was coming, and for the price, their service is still the best out there. Their streaming catalog is head and shoulders above either of their competitors (Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime).

Apparently, it costs a lot of money to provide that service of streaming videos.

It looks to me like you could actually save 2 bucks a month by sticking with just the streaming portion of the service (which is the only portion I currently use).


note: the Canadian version of Netflix is different from the American one, in both content, and price.

Can argue it is a savings for some... can argue it's an increase for some. I can botch about paying for something I used to get for free.

Ultimately it is all moot.

They are a private business... they can do what they want. if they piss off customers or try to overcharge, then customers will leave.

As an aside I am pissed about how Cable Companies have raises there prices. The reason is different. They negotiated to get the right to hang their cables on PUBLIC PROPERTY... and in return for that they agreed to regulations. Later... after they had all the cables in place, they bribed politicians to get those regulations removed.

The insertion of public property in the mix should give me, the tax payer, a right that I would not otherwise have.

Amazon has a streaming service? spurgistan was unaware.

This thread idea is NOT silly! I was told by MSN and Facebook users to be outraged. I have no idea why I'm supposed to be outraged.

On a related note, the price of milk went up yesterday and boy am I outraged!

We pay $7.99/month. Due to licensing agreements, we don't have the same selection available. I have no idea about the mail-in service, since I never use it.

Actually, they're increasing the price only for the home-delivery service.

The reason as to why they're hiking up the price is probably because most of their clientele has switched over mostly to streaming services, and because of that, they don't have massive shipments of DVDs all the time, which raises their /DVD delivery price, which is in turn given over to the consumer.

Yeah, I've been seeing the same complaints at other sites I frequent. Mostly, it's just people mad that there's a price increase. Personally, I use ONLY the home-DVD service and don't use the streaming at all. But the price increase doesn't really bother me, as it's not an exhorbitant one and still seems like good value to me.

I've been meaning to sign up for this...but was too busy with kids hockey to have the spare time to watch movies, and now it is summer and too busy with camp to watch movies. One of these days I will do it...

AND Redbox is more expensive too, now!!!

It'd be fine if they expand the streaming service. There's some shows or movies that are DVD only, and now you'll have to get two separate services from what I understand. Or you can just use the streaming and go to the video store for unavailable titles.

Yes, my only complaint with Netflix is that I cannot get any movie or show I want on my X-Box subscription... I can only get those shows which Netflix allows me to watch (i.e. I can watch the X-Men cartoon from the 1990s, but I can't watch Mad Men).

I don't mind the price increase, because as Woodruff indicated, it's good value. I've more than made up for $8 and I'll more than make up for $16 just this weekend.

I looked into Netflix, but for all their hype about a huge selection, they had very little beyond the most current and popular movies. You coud get a smattering of foreign films, and maybe a few classics, but not the variety we got even in our local video store. (went out of business due to divorce issues, but anyway).

Most good movies are made from good books. So to the source, and if you have no money, it is free at the library.

I'll have to disagree with you. I currently have 487 movies in my queue...these are all movies that I specifically want to watch and have never seen previously. Now, I go the home-DVD route rather than streaming, but the variety on Netflix is HUGE, in my opinion.

Honestly, I wouldn't care about this. I'd just switch to streaming and if there was a movie I REALLY wanted to see and wasn't available I'd just pirate it.

Unfortunately, I've had the one-out-a-time dealio and my ex still is in possesion of that movie. No matter how fucking much I try to contact her she ignores me. Looks like I'll have to be paying for that movie =(

Use netflix for streaming and use redbox to get a movie for a night that they don't have streamed. Thats the answer. Also its a 5 raise, that is absolutely pittance when compared to cable/dish prices today.

That's a fair comment about their streaming service, but they really do have quite a large catalog for their mailing service.
