Anyone else think that doctors are going to need a union with the new healthcare law in place?

The largest union for medical professionals

Stupid Obamacare, forcing doctors to defend their interests in 1847 (and who, incidentally, love Medicare).

How do existing unions negate the need for unions?

I don't follow your logic.

I wonder why doctors love Medicare.

I don't think doctors do in general.

Do unions always represent the best interests of the people they're supposed to represent?

(1) Doctors who like money, like medicare. Doctors who abide by the hippocractic oath do not.
(2) The AMA is not a union.
(3) Unions represent the best interests of the people running the union.

I guess it really depends on the situation. I've talked to doctors who have said they actually lose money on medicare patients but have to accept them or they would damage relationships with their referral sources, thereby putting their offices out of business.

You have a living wage baby boy. Also, social security. And safety controls only matter to real men with real jobs. Not sissies sitting in offices.

Well, Unions presumably did give him some safety stuff like, emergency exits and fire alarms.

bedub1 wrote:The people that oppose Right-To-Work bills make me laugh.

Common Sense says workers who don't want to belong to a union shouldn't be forced to pay Union dues. They should have to negotiate, on their own, for their pay, vacation time, raises etc.

People who live in "right-to-work" states make less money, have fewer benefits, and can be fired at any time. Cry me a river.

bedub1 wrote:Supporters of Unions think that Unions should be able to steal money from Non-union members.

Non-Resident Aliens still get taxed for using our roads and not worrying about roving gangs of robbers.

bedub1 wrote:I'm all for Unions, as long as membership is voluntary. If you voluntarily choose to join a union, then you should have to abide by it's rules, including paying Union Dues.

Isn't America a Union?

How fucking retarded is it?

So, you think that employees at Ford are gonna have a sit-down with the head of HR, hash all these things out? Is that how corporations work? Or are they gonna get the benefits of unions fighting for them (like, you know, weekends) without having to pay for it? The free-riders are the opposite of who you think they are.

Unions are like fire.

Yes, fire provides heat and cooks your food and provides light to see, and these are all good things, but if you don't keep an eye on the fire, it will burn down your house and kill everyone in your family...

I think this is why Roosevelt made that dumb law that keeps everyone from being in a national Union.
Outside of citizenship I mean.

I get it because I work for companies that can actually afford to pay me since they don't have a million retirees who get union crap. 40 hour work weeks suck anyways. Why not let me work 120 hours and make 3 times as much?

You just spectacularly failed Labor History 101. I bet if you think about it, you can figure this out why without anyone explaining it to you. Why would any businessmen give their workers a 40 hour work week, or benefits of any kind if they didn't have to?
Ask China why they don't have Unions.

Ok, the poll has a lost of 4 things that labor unions gave us.

Here is my own list of things labor unions took away:
Gas pump attendants who pump your gas
Elevator Men
Chauffers
Live-In Maids, Nannies and Butlers
Serfs
Grocers who go and get your stuff for you
Doctors for whom the House Call is Standard
Etc.

Since labor is now so expensive, instead of the top 20% affording these necessities all the time, only the 1% can afford it. Unions destroyed the rightful order of things, in which everywhere I go, I get waited upon by people who can't afford to eat at the same table as me. Now, even though I'm relatively well off, I can't afford anything. Unions basically created the middle class in the short term, but since it is an unsustainable form of life, it destroyed it in the long haul too. Also, look how many jobs are gone. At least in Serf periods everyone was guaranteed a job.

Damn Straight.

Also, as Yoshi said above. Short term gain, long term pain.

Unions were crucial in bringing forth safety rights for workers, better conditions and a livable wage.
Now they are bloated, self serving, entitlement granting choke points in business and economy.

They should be voluntary, because this would make them accountable. They still need to exist to counter business greed, but the pendulum has swung to much the other way. Ambition and education should be the largest factors in the wage you make.
