U.S. Election Voted Biggest News Story in Canada in 2012

Canadians voted the U.S. election the biggest thing to happen to Canada in 2012. In second place was Hurricane Sandy's impact in the Maritime provinces, followed by the Quebec corruption scandal, the Amanda Todd Suicide in B.C. and the manhunt for accused Toronto killer Luke Magnotta.

The story of the medium-sized iceberg that floated by Halifax captivated the imagination of Canadians for most of March, but didn't manage to crack the top 5 in the CBC poll.

Though widely reported at the time, Canadian Justin Bieber's brief, 3-day visit to Canada, didn't maintain enough long-term excitement to top the CBC survey.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's decision to purchase new vehicles for his motorcade caused a minor scandal, but didn't upset Canadians enough for them to rank it a top story.

Stephen Harper had an opportunity to get his copy of "The Audacity of Hope" autographed when Barack Obama stopped at a Niagara Falls Barnes & Noble for a book signing. Though the event topped Canadian headlines for 3 weeks after, it didn't hit the high point in the CBC poll.

The opening of Fort Nelson's first Chinese restaurant was a big deal in June but, by December, other stories had surpassed it for attention.
