This is pretty exciting news. Even if it's only babies born with it that can benifit. They are the group that most deserves a cure in my opinion. Yeah I'm cold toward those that participate in high risk activities.

I heard about this on NPR's news radio earlier. They cited something like 300,000 babies born with HIV worldwide in 2011. It is an interesting step in the battle.

Wouldn't you consider leaving the womb a high risk activity?

It is exciting, but needs to be repeated before it is more than a unique set of circumstances.

And, the uses are far more limited than we could wish. There were several unique factors, the baby was exposed at birth, treated immediately, before any infection was confirmed (later it was confirmed). Then the mother absconded and the baby reappeared, curred. Its not at all certain that this could work for babies later or for babies that had been infected prior to birth.

Its exciting, but we have to be careful not to overblow the impact.

Yes, but not for catching HIV in particular.

I wonder if this is not just a temporary cure but can become a permanent vaccine? Thus, the baby won't be able to get HIV again (kind of like chicken pox). And don't tell me that's impossible. We never had someone get HIV twice in their life so, as far as i am concerned, my theory is as good as yours.

Can I say it's improbably and HIV might be ever so slightly different from chicken pox?

Yes. Yes you can. But imagine if it was possible. The optimist in me can hope.

Although HIV is one of the last main diseases that keeps the world's population in check and if we find a cure for it then there will be war.

Nah. Syphilus killed way more people until they solved that one. There will always be new STDs until the J man gets back.

I'm glad, however, I'd rather those resources be spent discouraging babies from needle sharing and other unsafe lifestyle choices so they don't get HIV in the first place.

Exactly, if it works on everyone then make the medicine too expensive if you're one of "them", but, the baby shouldn't have picked a mom with the bad aids.

What was it thinking?
