Fordham University School of Law last weekend convened a mock court. The court voted to unanimously convict the United Kingdom of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Irish. The court's six judges represented a cross-section of distinguished international jurors and historians -

Adrian Hardiaman - Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland (active)
John Ingram - Justice of the Supreme Court of New York (active), ex-Capt. U.S. Navy
Major-General James Cullen - Chief Justice of the U.S. Court of Military Appeals (retired)
William Schabass - Professor of Human Rights Law at Middlesex University - London
Ruan O'Donnell - Professor of History at Limerick University - Limerick, IE
Tim Pat Coogan - Dublin-based historian and author of The IRA and de Valera

The court was sponsored, in part, by the American Committee for the Commemoration of Victims of the Irish Hunger and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

The court recommended reparations in the amount of $1.2 trillion be paid in a compensation fund to be put under international administration. Afterwards, judges and Fordham law students enjoyed light refreshments and cocktails in mid-town Manhattan. A fun time was had by all at the event.

Perhaps reparations are warranted by the Germans, and Americans, and maybe some others?

In relative numbers, this government-caused catastrophe may have been worse than Stalin's intervention in Ukraine.

Are the British ashamed of this?

Should the Moors reimburse Spain for invasion costs from 1200 years ago?

Perhaps the Ug tribe should pay in shells for transgressions they did on the Moog tribe in Mesopotamia 28,000 years ago?

What think you?

If ample evidence exists for a judicial body to convict the Ug tribe and the transgressions were in violation of statutory or customary law that existed 28,000 years ago, then yes. I agree.

Nay, let the trial be to the laws, statutes and standards of present practice for transgressions that occurred in the past.

OK.

Anyway, back to the topic, BBS' point is correct. The State of New Jersey even includes the Irish Holocaust in the mandatory grades K-5 Genocide Studies curriculum (http://www.state.nj.us/education/holocaust/curriculum/). Hopefully the conviction of the UK can inspire other states to incorporate it into their curricula.

I just checked Bing-dot-Com Images and couldn't find one. The slavery office at the Park Service might have one, though. (http://www.nps.gov/subjects/ugrr/index.htm)

how one dimensional. I'm not exactly sure how many slaves the British kidnapped in Africa and brought to the Western hemisphere, but I know it was more than all other countries combined.

Nah, Spain and Portugal later drove them back across the Straits.

Not like the potato was about the only thing most people could afford to have or anything like that.

Sorry- Alan Partridge reference. My general opinion is that while it wasn't genocide, it was a massive crime. I've always liked Swift's parody of how the British were thinking at the time:
