need new laptop, please find one ...

- need at least 8GB ram
- memory doesn't matter, I save everything to an external hard drive
- lighter the better, no optical drive necessary
- graphics needs to at least be equivalent to the ATI Radion HD 5700
- OS needs to be Windows 7 or 8

THANK YOU, GANG!

I'm not sure - what do you think I should expect to spend for something like that?

serious advice: don't do it... windows 8 is like someone tried to blend a Mac and a tablet, then threw the OS onto a PC... it is an SOB to try to work on

The price range for the laptops that your asking for is around, $700 with a graphics card that is equal, or a little less than the one your looking for. Even though both of these laptops are windows 8, You could get someone to revert it to 7 (or do it yourself. yes, Windows 8 is that bad)

Also, windows 8 was meant only for phones and tablets, then someone was like "Lets put it on a computer!" and we all hate that guy.

Of the two recommendations you offered, which has a graphics card that is almost exactly equal to the ATI Radion HD 5700?

How much €s would a microwave set me back? Also, would I still be able to play CC on it? If I went with a microwave for a new laptop, would I have to replace my desktop with a stove for compatibility issues? (Or could I possibly upgrade my current stove? It's a Kenmore 30" 36903.)

Why does it HAVE to be Windows 7 or 8?

Get a Macbook Air.

If you need a Windows OS you can load VMWare Fusion.

My wife's work used to require her to have Windows to log into the network remotely.

After enough hassles with PC's I opt'd for an iMac...

I then got a second screen and installed VMWare Fusion and Windows XP.
I have it setup so the Mac OS appears on the primary screen.. and XP appears on the second screen.

It has worked like a charm for six years.

BTW... I sold Windows based PC's and Networks for 15 years. I have above average knowledge in working with PC's.
(I'm not claiming to be a hacker... just saying my knowledge is above the average middle-class computer-using American.)

I have very little experience with Macs.

I was able to setup and install the Mac solution above quicker than I could setup a Windows machines and get in online and on my home network and printing.

Was it worth the extra 1000 bucks you had to spend on it? ;)

If you have 15 years experience with Windows it should be a snap to get a home network going. Especially with Win 7 or WIn XP.
Just make sure you don't use Win98, ME, Vista, or Windows 8.
Anything else is manageable.

It wasn't that much... not for equal hardware levels.

Maybe $650-$700.

... and the answer is yes.

I have not hd to mess around with this thing for 6+ years.

It's worked like a charm.

I SOLD the stuff for 15years... wasn't a tech.
Though I did play around with the hardware and OS and have again "above averge" sills.

I have and can setup a PC based network... and it's not hard.

I was however (as stated) easier to do it with Mac hardware... even though I had very little experience with that.

Fair enough.

I loath apple personally; but that is a great argument and I am glad you are happy :) - one thing apple does do well is simple ease of use.

(not being sarcastic btw, though it may seem like I am).

Not just that, but Apple is better if...

1) you care about how something looks (I don't but my wife does)... one of our iMacs is in the Kitchen where everyone sees it.

2) you care about how something sounds. Many of these PC's get very loud with the cooling fans. The iMac has designed the thing to be much quieter. (This may be less of an issue now... may last PC was 6+ years ago [well aside from work supplied Thinkpad]... so newer PC's may be quieter.

... as an aside, that work supplied Thinkpad (which was a higher-end model) was a tight little machine. Very robust. I put a LOT of stress on that.
