I'm not sure, but I think the older ones (at the bottom of the page) up until Choice of Intrigues, are free to play and afterwards you can only do a sort of demo for free and have to pay a couple bucks for the rest. (though they might have changed it since I last played)

I've always looked for games that allow you to immerse yourself into a story/world, so I kinda like these a lot. They're pretty well written and the choices you are given actually make sense and are meaningful.

Interactive fiction...isn't that essentially what AD&D is?

Well then...I do like it. But I don't tend to like a lot of non-"high fantasy" environments.

Some Visual Novels are also really great; most of them aren't quite as interactive though.

It's not that interactive. It's basically like a choose your own adventure book, but taking advantage of the benefits of the online medium which allows for more complex stories to be told in this way. So they just give you like a chunk of text and you have to choose how you react to the situation.
It also has some RPG elements as your choices affect your stats which in turn limit your future choices.

I think I remember playing that way back. I think I managed to get killed at like age 7 or something. I should give it another go.

I don't mind high fantasy environments, as long as the characters we play are low-fantasy. I would rather play the farmer at the Prancing Pony than those shorty-pants.

I did enjoy the choose your own adventure Goosebumps books.
