I'm considering pretending to be surprised. I'll have to get back to you.

New York Times wrote:The order was sought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under a section of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the 1978 law that regulates domestic surveillance for national security purposes, that allows the government to secretly obtain “tangible things” like a business’s customer records. The provision was expanded by Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which Congress enacted after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The collection of call logs is set to expire in July unless the court extends it.

The collection of communications logs — or calling “metadata” — is believed to be a major component of the Bush administration’s program of surveillance that took place without court orders. The newly disclosed order raised the question of whether the government continued that type of information collection by bringing it under the Patriot Act.

This isn't surprising, but I wonder why it's scarier now than it was when Bush was in office?

... while others might wonder why it was more scary when Bush was in office than it is now.

Obama is so much better, so whatever you say is wrong, and I won't think about it cuz I know it's wrong because Obama is in office.

It isn't scarier now except that Verizon has been required to turn over it's records, which apparently it was not required to do under the Bush administration. I mean, I know Bush was bad and Obama is awesome, but c'mon now.

How scary was it when Nixon was in office?

Apparently, it wasn't. Nixon resigned in 1974, but that law (according to the Times, at least) went into effect in 1978, when Jimmy Carter was President.
As to how scary it was then, I can't say, as I hadn't been born yet.

The New York Times filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit in 2011 for a report describing the government’s interpretation of its surveillance powers under the Patriot Act. But the Obama administration withheld the report, and a judge dismissed the case.

I wonder on what grounds the suite was thrown out or dismissed ?
