I'm very close to one right now, walking distance, have the time, and really don't have anything else to do.
Except you know any hot girl in SD who wants to come in my hotel room and gimme a bj.

I used to be a professional tarot card reader and palm reader. I even designed my own deck, which is sitting in the house somewhere, wrapped in black silk and stored in a wooden box, facing north-south.

Most of us have been to psychic readers to find the solutions to our problems.

I gave up for a number of reasons, mainly boredom. Most readings fell into a small number of categories.
I wasn't ripping people off though, it wasn't a con. I don't guarantee I have genuine "psychic powers, but I didn't just make it all up.
In fact, it was encountering a real fake that turned this stuff from a hobby and occasional party trick to a profession. I thought, "I know I'm better than her, and she's making money. And all her customers are being ripped off, which they wouldn't be if they were paying ME".

nope, but the next day I noticed it said on the window "Special offer, 15 mins 15 dls"
With my last minutes in San Diego I went to a sensory deprivation tank instead

I walked out from there like the guy from office space

Oh and that cost me 75 dollars

Getting back on the off-topic topic...
I did go to a psychometrist once, at the behest of my neighbour who was into hippy stuff.
On the plus side, she identified my career (which, if I'm being honest, wouldn't be hard to guess from looking at me), although not my specialism; on the minus side, she claimed that I would go to America (which I never have), and failed to mention that in the space of a month, my girlfriend's house would be flooded and she'd have to move in with me (after a 3 week relationship which hadn't started at the point I had the reading), her neighbour would die, my grandfather would die, and I'd be made redundant after more than 9 years in the job.
That was just over 20 years ago. Still waiting for the American trip...

Are psychometrists, palm readers, and the like a net benefit to society?

What do you mean, you just deal cards and give an interpretation you learned reading some "psychic for dummies" book?

There's a little more study involved than that, but essentially yes.

Its kind of ironic, the more flamboyant, showy folks are, they less likely they are to be real. There actually are real psychics out there, though they are very rare. Most of them don't make money off it, though some will try to help law enforcement. Most Tarot readers and such are worlds away from most real psychic phenomena, most are essentially entertainers, as you apparently were. I see no more harm in it than, say, someone charging for a magic show or for playing an instrument.
The problem comes with those who use it as a scam. A lot of older oriental women are apparently being taken right now by the "let me wash your money" scheme. Someone claims to be able to rid the person of serious misfortune or prevent misfortune if the victim will bring all their money and jewels to be "spiritually cleansed". It works because of some cultural beliefs, which is why I specified "older oriental women", though there is a similar scam that targets other groups as well.
Anyway, to get back to the original question.. if you have the money to spend and choose to spend it on this type of entertainment.. go for it. Just don't believe its real.

I cannot, of course, speak for Jones, but its really pretty easy to "do a reading". (have done it for Halloween, etc ... and found, to my dismay that some people actually thought I was psychic

) There are books that talk about parts of the palm, tarot cards and such, but mainly you just listen to people and watch their body language. People tend to give away a lot more than they realize.
20/20 or one of those shows did a segment where the interviewer went to a reading. She initially thought the psychic was "right on", but then when reviewing the tape, realized that she had actually told the psychic that she had boys, etc, etc. It was an interesting segment.

Yes, super observant is the vibe I'm getting here off playa.
Like for example the fact that she accuses Jones of doing readings for entertainment, completely overlooking the fact that, he shows the serious respect for magic required to keep his deck properly.

There was a show on discovery with a psychic, he would tell you after the trick what he did to make you give tells or to incept an idea in your brain without you noticing.
Regarding the psychics that are used for crime scenes.. Nice load of diarea. You got to be pretty desperate on one of your cases to ask a psychic.

It's been in the paper today that Uri Geller claims to have been a) working as a spy for the CIA and b) ended the Cold War.
As far as I'm aware, ex-Mossad agents recruited by the CIA don't tend to advertise the fact...
It's nutters like him that remove any semblance of credibility (if there is any) from the proper consideration of the "supernatural" - or to use Michael Bentine's phrase, the supra-conscious.
I also see that some orientals are trying to increase their life spans (and other aspects) by plastic surgery on their hands to lengthen the "lines".
It's nutters like them that remove any semblance of credibility (if there is any) from the human race...

So, where's the evidence that supports the supernatural attributes of psychics or the claim that "there actually are real psychics out there"?
