Do both but not in that order.

In February, Carter was involved in an argument about a video game on Facebook when people responded by telling him he was "crazy". He replied: "Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head. I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still-beating hearts." The comment was followed by "lol" and "jk", to indicate the jokes were in jest.

I recall seeing several articles from bigger media outlets which omitted the important, underlined part.

As news agencies which should be in accord with their alleged ethics of journalism, are they being held accountable for this terrible reporting? Either customers can leave, some organization can at least enforce the (non-existent) ethics of journalism, or what?

It's such a rampant problem because I see it happening with much more serious stories. How can such a problem be resolved?

It reminds me of the time David Cameron (Americans: read 'President Cameron of the UK') sent text messages ending with 'lol'.

Haha, that's a good funny one which only ruins the reputations of the anchors and news station.

Omitting the "jk" only ruins Carter's reputation. I don't imagine many viewers leaving such news businesses--even if they discover that there was more to the story.
