"Dude! She Rich!!!"

Eating at Jimmy Johns means you are rich?

“Dude, she’s rich! She’s eating at a restaurant,” the suspect says. “I didn’t break her nose. I snatched her purse. It was sitting on the table. I swear to God I wouldn’t hit her.” The entire ordeal was captured on video.

Three men in Grand Rapids, Mich., worked together to detain a female purse-snatching suspect until police could arrive to make an arrest. The men pinned the suspect on the ground following an intense struggle while Good Samaritans comforted the victim.

Meanwhile, a group of people gathered around the 75-year-old victim, Evelyn Searl, who had been eating lunch with her daughter when she was robbed.

Good stuff. I think, and I'm being a pedant on this one, we can lay off the Samaritans as a figure of speech.

Exactly. From now on people who do good deeds shall be known as "al Qaeda"

What did you feel when you saw the good Samaritan man pounding the face of the female purse-snatcher?

Justice? Betrayal? Revenge? Love?

I didn't feel he was a Samaritan, good or bad.

About two years ago I witnessed what clearly appeared to be a mugging in the Flatiron district of New York at around midnight on a Wednesday. Myself and a garbageman - who dramatically leaped from his truck - confronted the mugger who voluntarily stopped and waited with us until the police arrived; no force was applied by me or the garbageman to restrain him, though I suspect we might have been willing to do so had he not been cooperative.

We later learned this was a domestic dispute between a guy and his crazy ex-girlfriend and it was unclear if, in fact, the bag was actually the boyfriend's property in the first place. The police released both with only an admonishment not to create public spectacles.

Anyway, from that point forward I made a decision that my only Good Samaritan obligation intervening in a property crime - as opposed to a violent assault - is to call the police and provide my contact information if a witness statement is needed. The potential for massive personal liability is too great to make recovery of a couple hundred dollars worthwhile.

A good Samaritan, using the analogy correctly, would be someone helping a person in need, unexpectedly. It's not a euphemism for being a vigilante, however worthwhile or deserving. Though that's a tad simple.

I feel the parable is being abused to be less about help coming from unexpected places, and more about wailing on a criminal.

No way. Now that China is adopting Good Samaritan laws, the label's here to stay, baby!

And we need 'em, too, especially with children being attacked so thieves can steal their eyes.
