WW2 Vets Denied; Illegal Aliens Granted

EDIT: Sorry I did not also include the WW2 vets link. My work got interrupted

On Sunday a bunch of WW2 vets arrived at the Iwo Jima memorial to find it "closed" and barricaded. It didn't really make the news, but the news was the vets 'stormed the barricades' and entered the memorial anyways!

UPDATE: I'm told, "The Syracuse Honor Flight just knocked down the barrier and a couple hundred of them are at the Memorial now."

then on Tuesday, the WW2 memorial barricaded but granted limited access, and on Wednesday the memorial was double barricaded and wired shut.

On Tuesday morning, seven National Park Service employees were seen erecting and tending to a barricade around the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. One NPS employee was operating a forklift. There usually aren't any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial.

A couple hours later, when an Honor Flight of World War II veterans arrived, accompanied by Democratic and Republican members of Congress, the fences blocking the memorial were easily moved away, allowing the veterans to enter.

But the barriers are still at the memorial, and they've been reinforced. This morning, I walked by the memorial and noticed that wires had been used to tie the fences together:

On Wednesday, Susana Flores, a spokesperson for the rally, confirmed for the Washington Examiner that the Park Service will allow the event to take place under the group's rights granted by the First Amendment.

Park Service OKs immigration reform rally on 'closed' National Mall
A planned immigration reform rally will take place on the National Mall on Tuesday even though the site is closed due to the government shutdown.

Organizers for the "Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform" were spotted Monday setting up a stage and equipment on the National Mall for the rally which will take place on Tuesday.

A few scattered barriers around the park have signs informing visitors that the area is closed as a result of the government shutdown.

Susana Flores, a spokesperson for the rally, confirmed for the Washington Examiner that the Park Service will allow the event to take place under the group's rights granted by the First Amendment.

About 30 members of Congress are expected to attend the rally, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.

The event is hosted by several immigration activist groups, together with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the AFL-CIO.

Nice article, pimpdave. Funny I didn't see any war veterans getting abused.

Having been to The National Mall many times and never realized
it was a place that could be or would be shut down.

It isn't a memorial itself and is far from a typical park.

It's not about abuse, it's about which group was granted access to closed down areas, and which group was denied access to closed down areas.

It's not about abuse. All this memorial photo op BS is absurd. A politician "shuts down the government" then shows up at the WWII Memorial to tell the press how upset he is? What a load of crap. There are a enough veteran groups and others available that with a little coordination, volunteers could have kept all these venues open.

It's amazing how much security appeared out of nowhere --both paid & unpaid-- with weapons drawn to shoot the Connecticut Dental Hygienist who drove her car into the barricade last week. But none of these people are available to keep an eye on public monuments and memorials in DC?

I stand corrected. Partially, anyway. The OP didn't mention any of that.

Wait - this was in New York City, not DC; the police officer was a city policeman, not a federal agent; the memorial is run by the New York City Parks Department, not the National Park Service; being a city property, the memorial's opening and closing hours haven't been impacted by the federal shutdown.

So let me get this straight: Scotty posts a trolling title implying that illegal immigrants are somehow attacking ww2 veterans. He posts a link which talks about an immigrants rally but makes no mention of any veterans being attacked. I laugh at his pimpdave-like attempt to smear some group with a trolling title not supported by his post. You then post a link of veterans being abused, and I assume that Scotty had made an honest mistake in leaving this information out of his OP. You actually get me feeling almost guilty about having judged him too harshly.

Now I find out not only that not only was the second link irrelevant to the OP link (making my initial conclusions correct) but that you knew it was when you posted it. I know that your rabid hatred of your duly-elected President borders on treasonous, but I've never known you to knowingly endorse dishonesty before. This will be a big crack in my foundation of respect for you.

dang. sorry gang. fixed.

This is about how the vets are being treated ALL OVER the country, and in comparison to how illegal immigrants are getting treated. It's about the Vets rights not being recognized or respected, but non-citizens rights are recognized and respected.

The Vietnam Vets coming into this separately (some of them were WW2 vets at a Vietnam Memorial) is just another example.

Those Vets are getting screwed while those illegal immigrants are hunted down and deported from a job which they're willing to traverse many miles to work. UHMERICA! QED.

Shouldn't that be 'American citizens protesting about immigration reform'? No mention of any illegal immigrants attending the protest.

How could you figure illegal immigrants would not attend or even want to attend an immigration reform protest which is driven by a group defending illegal aliens trying to get something for illegal aliens?

Is an 'immigration activist group' so unlikely to have illegal immigrants in it that you would doubt illegal immigrants were in it and active to the point of rallying at the national mall?

Who do you think was at the protest?

Do protests usually not include victims of the policy protested? Because that would mean less.

Would you likewise normally assume that a protest for veterans benefits did not have any veterans at the protest? Likewise, a protest for veterans benefits that did not have any veterans at it would probably be a waste of time if not even a single veteran showed up.

Just saying, some things go without saying

So based on your assumption that illegal immigrants attended the rally we can conclude that permission was effectively granted for illegal immigrants to protest while WW2 veterans received unfavorable treatment, in a blatant display of political favoritism by the Park Service?

1) The immigration protest was already scheduled to take place, and was merely allowed to proceed according to plan. The veterans turned up un-announced, and so found that the barriers to the memorial were still in place when they got there. They were, however, 'easily' able to have the barriers removed and gained access to the memorial anyway.

2) A protest is highly likely to have a considerable police presence. I don't know if you've ever lived illegally in another country but illegal immigrants don't tend to tempt fate by joining political organisations, and especially not by hanging out with a bunch of police all day.

I see no evidence of discrimination or unequal treatment in the two stories you posted, and I see no evidence that illegal immigrants were involved in the protest in any capacity.

Many veterans showed up through the Honor Flight program, which takes weeks or months of planning to get veterans to their memorials.

Is that what these veterans did? Did they notify the Park Service in advance?
