3. You can deny Google.com cookies, while accepting mail.google.com cookies so that your gmail account works.
I've set my browser to ask me whether I should Accept, Accept for Session, or Deny any cookie. It takes 1 second on average to deal with the browsers' questions, but over time it's worth it and it becomes much less than a second after denying what you dislike and accepting what you want.
