Any of you pilgrims have / know about tablets that ARENT ipads? Looking at the android OS... I want to get one for my 10 year old son for xmas and am having a hellofa time researching.....I am thinking the top of the line no-name (Allwinner listed in the top 10 best tablets while still being affordable)

http://www.top10besttabletsreviews.com/ ... fgodNjsAFA

as opposed to bottom of the line NAME brand. Were talking a difference between $160 (WITH a Bluetooth keyboard) and $300+ (usa sellers on ebay) for essentially the identiacal performance stats and it IS for a 10 year old.......?? Thanks for your help / animosity / rage in advance!!

ps...heres the links for the items that I'd picked:

Allwinner: http://www.ebay.com/itm/310799927197?var=610220127564&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2795wt_837

Samsung: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-GT-P5113-16GB-Wi-Fi-10in-Titanium-Silver-/171186902784?pt=US_Tablets&hash=item27db88d700#ht_24wt_1075

page outta my book

get the older model tablet, used, and still bargain for a better price. And there is a lesson that might come with it if they cry about not getting the one they wanted.

Kool, it will last a couple of years at the most if he doesn't drop it, sit on it, etc. What is he doing with it? I assume some social networking and perhaps email, and minor gaming as opposed to gaming that needs video cards, etc.

My suggestion....cheap as you can find at Wal Mart.

AllWinner is actually the chip, not a name. My wife has a cheap no name tablet and it has the AllWinner A13 chip in it. Personally I'd go with the Samsung, it may cost more, at the same time you know it will be reliable.

Is the Galaxy water resistant. That's the only problem with my ipad. I've dropped it a bunch.

Phones and these are kind of wierd, you drop them once and they might be done. Other units might be tougher.

Try Huawei. As with all Chinese brands they are selling the same product at half the price.

Good luck with customer support and the warranty. If the Chinese brand has those services in the US, then I'd go for it.

Thanks for the input guys....I am definitely NOT getting a $350 present for him....daddy dunna sell that many belts....lol. Think I'll give hime a safeway gift card instead so he can fooking EAT

And to answer your question notyou, he'll primarily play kiddie games (minecraft, etc), watch youtube videos and play on kiddie sites on the internet; he's got an old itouch for music and he's not yet into pix and he has 4 computers at home / in the shop to do homework on....I'm thinking the allwinner may be a winner.....

Is a nintendo DS an option. I even enjoy playing on those. Looks like around $100 but then you have to buy a couple of games.

If you get clubhouse games you can play backgammon and checkers plus darts, bowling and a bunch of card games. It's pretty fun. Get a second unit later and it lets you play against him. They can make these chat rooms that send a wireless signal between them. Pictures typed out messages and even drawings. The second unit can be a cheap used one since it's not the gift.

http://www.ebay.com/nintendo-ds

I better go. I'm probably being the opposite of helpful.

Well you're not supposed to go swimming in the Saskatchewan River with it ya' know. And if they get wet while shut off, just place it in a bowl of rice and it'll dry out.

I had an iphone quite a while ago. Dropped it in the dog dish. Dead! All the rivers here are dry today.

A wet dog dish is no place for a cell phone, 2dimes. You should try the dry rivers next time.

If you're a phone dropper (like me) then Nokia is the way to go. Even the smart phones can be dropped onto concrete, smashed, put back together and then used again (in my experience).

I dropped my iPhone the other day on a wooden floor. Nothing happened. I dropped my laptop once, nothing happened.

I spilled a whole cup of coffee on the laptop, I was able to recover it, I only had to buy the keyboard again because i take my coffee with 1 of sugar. The cat peed the backpack in which the laptop was, I had to clean it all in the inside but, nothing happened.

My sister put my mom's hearing aid in the washing machine, it was in there with the machine going for 15 mins before I took it out, I was able to recover it.

I'm the macgiver of the wet electronics.

But seriously, electronics today can normally handle drops and getting wet if you quickly take the battery out.

There is a thing called a boogie board. It's too expensive for that joke but it is a touch screen.

In case anyone is interested, I got the tablet and set it up for my boy....I don't know the android op sys but it was fairly intuitive. Quality seems to be good....OBVIOUSLY not an ipad air (like my brother just got) or a kindle fire (like my sister just got) BUT, for $400 dollars LESS, I am damn happy. Its fast and I like the 10 inch screen....now we'll just see how long it lasts in the hands of a 10 year old
