People call this thing a rock, but technically it is living and they acknowledge that it is living. So whatever it is, is it cruel to slice it open alive, given that it probably has a nervous system?
I've probably seen one of these and just thought it was a rock...
Does it have feelings? Is it cruel to eat chicken?

During the harvest, I bemoan the fate of millions of plants which are cruelly sliced open alive and probably have a nervous system.

The existence of a nervous system is not what determines whether it is cruel. What matters is whether the nervous system equips the being to feel pain.

True, it is about whether there is the capacity for pain. But doesn't every nervous system bring the capacity to feel pain?
Also this is not an actual rock nor is it a plant species. It's technically an animal. I don't know why people keep saying that it is a rock.

No. Nervous systems merely allow for the coordination of actions between different parts of the body. That does not necessarily imply the capacity to feel pain.

Our collective capacity for acknowledging sentience in non-human animals is sadly lacking - Whether or not this particular creature has sentience is something that I have no idea about -
But considering we seem to have no issue slicing, dicing and factory farming non-human animals that clearly do have sentience, it's hardly surprising that people would cut open a creature like this without a second thought under the name of 'science' -

Damn right it was worth it! That was a fire ant colony. Gotta exterminate them anyway, at least that way you get a pretty cool cast.

Aww, I don't have anything against fire ants, it's just I'm American and fire ants are an invasive species. They aren't supposed to be living in the US. So we pretty much have to exterminate fire ants where ever they are found. They do damage to native species. Down in South American where fire ants are supposed to live, I'd be a lot more "live and let live" of an attitude. But in the US, they have to be wiped out (not that there is ever going to be much of a chance of that happening, but still, anywhere they are found in the US they should be exterminated, IMO). Invasive species are often bad for environments.
The guy that made that video got a ton of hate mail (hate e-mail?). People saying "I should pour molten aluminum in your home!" and other lame stuff like that. Maybe these people didn't realize they were fire ants? Though, to be fair, I don't know if that was a fire ant colony in the US. I'm just making that assumption I suppose. If it's in the US not a thing wrong with wiping out the colony. If where the fire ants are indigenous, I give discretion to the locals. IMO.

So do I. Hahaha! I think it would be pretty awesome to have an aluminum cast of an ant colony.

I say that because they're viscious little b*stards. Here or in South America. Anything that is in their way, they attack all out.

Hahah! I bet! Yeah, if you wanna pour molten aluminum down fire ant holes I sure as hell won't give you any crap about it.
When I was a kid I went on vacation to Louisiana and my brother and I being the little terrors that we were, found a fire ant nest. Boy did we have fun tossing crickets and grasshoppers into those fire ants. It was amazing how fast those ants killed, dismembered and carried off the parts into the colony.
It was all fun and games until the little bastards got to stinging us. Then it wasn't so fun at all.

I have no issue with the ant colony because the ants would die almost immediately upon being touched by the molten aluminum, possibly sooner because of how hot the hole would get. The rock-like animal though and all other animals I wish humans would just kill first.

I think it's horrible what they are doing. Humans do not seem to care about causing suffering to other animals.
One bad meal humans eat is balut, which is a chicken egg that has a partially-grown chicken inside it.
