Close to ditching facebook.

Closing the account and forgetting about it.

Anyone else deleted their account?

One the one hand, it's nice to keep in contact with people that you don't see often without having to do a lot of work. On the other hand it's full of stupid memes and other pointless crap that people post all the time.

I don't have an ad blocker otherwise the volume of ads would make the negative list as well.

get:

AdBlock+
DoNotTrackMe

tada, although some FB ads within the status feed pop up (since they come directly from FB and blocking them would block the rest of FB).

I have a good ad blocker... ads aren't the problem. People posting crap is the problem.

You can't ever delete it - You can 'de-activate it' but if you ever log back in, all the stuff will be there

I have a Facebook account that I'm vaguely aware of. I think I may go on once a month. Here is my tried and true method for not caring about Facebook:

- Get a job where you work 60 to 70 hours a week
- Have a spouse and two young children
- Have hobbies (e.g. writing, participating on internet forums, reading, participating on internet gaming sites, video games, sports)
- Drink beer with your friends instead of drinking beer while looking at your friends' Facebook pages.

The best thing about Facebook is finding out whether girls that were hot in high school and college are still hot (note: the answer is usually no, unfortunately).

If I was not on there I might not have found this.

If I was on Facebook instead of CC, I might not have found that.

I'm just clicking random things on CC to try to get those. If getting stars is linked to Facebook in some way, I'm screwed.

Check your inventory. You don't get alerted everytime.

Had a 60-70 hours a week job a couple of times and don't plan to ever again... unless it's my business.
No thanks.
Have hobbies...
I don't have friends...
And you're right, 9/10 no. Mostly because tastes change rather than them getting ugly, but some of them do get damn ugly.

I ve lived in many places throughout my life and it s the only way to keep track of friends living far.
I don t use facebook as much as i used to though.
And you can hide people always posting annoying things. If they all do, change your friends!

If it wasn't for Facebook, I would never had a chance to screw your wives and girlfriends. Nothing like a bored and unsatisfied housewife and her looking around cyberspace for some action.

Thanks Facebook!

a few pieces of advice for people using facebook:

1. go into the settings and make sure your privacy is max. no need for the whole world to see your posts/friends/likes/etc.
2. be extremely selective with whom you become friends. you don't have 538 friends in real life, do you? i've got exactly 23 permanent friends on facebook and that's just fine. on rare occasions i add people temporarily and remove them when i no longer need to have contact with them.
3. install Adblock Plus and F.B. Purity. this way you'll get rid of ads sponsored stories annoying posts and whatever crap FB has. i had to log on my FB account from another person's laptop to send a quick message and i was amazed at how crappy FB looks without ABP and FBP.
4. don't stay on facebook 24/7 posting all kinds of crap. keep your posts to a minimum.

Good for you. I support you in this decision. I have also done that.

All social media is a form of superficial/psuedo socialization.
I would argue that they mostly have negative effects.
- Enabling attention-whoring.
- Small windows of perspectives of people's lives through pictures uploaded can cause dissatisfaction with your own life.
- Enables people to not actually keep in touch because they "have them" on social media. A real relationship with someone is made with constant, consistent effort and with physical presence.
- Enables data farming of personal information.
- Can destroy privacy all-together.
- Seems to indirectly put focus on your image rather than who you really are.

Those are only a few reasons why it's bad. I'm sure there are other harmful effects.

radiojake wrote:You can't ever delete it - You can 'de-activate it' but if you ever log back in, all the stuff will be there

That's partially true.
They give you the option to "delete" it but if you decide to, which I did, they still keep some things.

Lot of Facebook accounts are all about renewing relationships whether it's friendships or old flames. Today's internet sites have ruined many marriages. So, boys and girls, you'd better check out and see what your spouse is up to on Facebook, LOL!

Go on your partner's account and delete all their friends of the opposite sex. It's the only way to be sure.
