I wondering why BBS hasn't told us all about the virtues of the MyRA announced by Obama in the State of the Disunion address?

Our buddy, Jack Lew (sounds like a trolling gamer tag, doesn't it?) our Sec of the Treasury, will be having a letter published in certain newspapers around the country telling us all about this new government retirement program. Mr Lew explains that for a one time contribution of $25 and then $5 a week one would have his nest egg secured.

I can't wait! At $25 + $5 a week for 30 years I'll have a grand total of $7,825 plus interest! Yippee yaw! One should be able to retire easily on that.

Wait, a second, my accountant is telling me something....
What? the rate of return will be around 1.47% and inflation is at 2.08%? So I'd actually be losing money?

Hmmm, well, I suppose I'll have to put a lot more in than just the minimum.

What? $15,000 is the maximum that can be accumulated? Well that's no good. And at that point I'd have to transfer that money to a traditional IRA that would have been earning a higher rate all the while anyway? Why the hell would I put money into the MyRA?

Oh, that's a good point. At least the MyRA gives a better rate of return than a savings account at a bank. I guess one could just use the MyRA as saving for future consumption rather than saving for future retirement.

But what's the point of the MyRA anyway? Is this the beginning of the "If you like your retirement plan you can keep it" deal?

As much as all state of the union addresses and their counters are political garbage, your insults are beneath you.

Insults show lack of intelligence and understanding, not power.

On an unrelated note, I just caught a bit of the president's 'Google Hangout' with people across the country asking him questions -- one woman from the East Coast talked about the less than pleasant rollout of the Affordable Care Act, thought she sort of danced around how much it was 'bungled.' Obama said, 'There is no need to pussyfoot around, the rollout wasn't great.'

I liked that he said pussyfoot. Obama 2016.
