Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland asks for advice from Ambassador Geoff Pyatt as to who the U.S. should pick to run Ukraine.

The celebrity boxer Vitali Klitschko was signed-on to be the face of the opposition protests - but Noland decides his usefulness will be up and the U.S. can cut him loose once the current government collapses.

"I don't think Klitsch should go into the government," Noland decides. "I think Yats [Arseniy Yatseniuk] is the guy."

Before they hang-up Victoria remembers to tell Geoff they've already picked the "UN guy" who will negotiate the transition to the new pro-U.S. government, Robert Serry from the Netherlands. The U.S. prefers to run the EU as the front man on these operations but it's been inefficient lately so "f*ck the EU" we'll use the UN instead Victoria explains. (3:01) Also, if they need to, they can order Vice-President Biden to fly out to give an "attaboy" and pose for photos with any of the natives whose feelings are hurt they didn't get picked to run the Ukraine.

The democratically elected government of Ukraine refused to join the EU (aka the US Eastern Regional Command). Immediately, "spontaneous youth pro-democracy protests" against the government broke out (see: Serbia, Libya, Syria, etc) and the Ukraine government is now teetering on the brink of collapse. US officials were recorded meeting to choose the new ruler of Ukraine after the non-compliant government is terminated; someone who will get it into the EU ASAP.

i feel sad about the ukranian youth that thinks that things will change drastically if they get closer to the EU. I don't really know if the EU guarantees ukraine to integrate our union thought. It would be pretty important strategically, don't know if we can afford it.
I really like Klitchko. This guy seems extremely honnest; he has already the money and the glory, he just wants to do something for his country. I also know that he is an extremely intelligent guy, he was very intelligent in his fights and he is an outstanding chess player too. The type of guy I would trust, like Kasparov for Russia.
I have no idea about the guy the US wants to parachute.

Ukraine was about to start signing the pieces of paper that would have got the ball rolling on their entry to the EU when Putin called the Ukrainian president in for a meeting, during which he persuaded the president to throw the brakes on the EU entry process (via a combination of offering cheap gas and threatening trade sanctions). The protests started because people were unhappy about EU entry being put on ice.

The reason Putin's throwing his spanner in is because he wants Ukraine to join his Customs Union instead of the EU.

What's really funny is that the US State department put out a statement saying the Russia recording a private conversation was a "New low in Russian tradecraft". Hahahahahah! How many private conversations does the NSA record every single day?
And since when is spying on foreign diplomats somehow a new low?

What's not so funny is the US' continued efforts to undermine and overthrow democratically elected governments.

It is humorous that the EU wants the Ukrainian president to resign because he is confronted with street protests. Ha! If the EU member nations held to that same model for themselves then neither Rajoy nor Samaras would be in power today. They didn't resign in the face of massive protests, but call on the Ukraine president to?

The deal with the EU wasn't just a trade deal, Ukraine would have had to make a lot of concessions not related to trade at all. It was just a bad deal outright and Russia offered a better one. Plus $15 billion...

The EU and the US were outraged and sputtered in indignation. Hilarity ensues.

while there is a lot of corruption in spain and greece; the heads of the government were elected in a legit way. Everybody knows that Russia picks so far a new muppet for their own interests. The ukranians are tiredof this BS. Protesting against a government democratically elected, and protesting against a government "democratically" elected isn't really comparable.

Not to mention the way that the Ukrainian president has been strong-arming business owners out of their companies so that his family can jump in and take over, which is abuse of power on a scale that the Med countries have yet to sink to.

Oh, the Ukraine has had problems in the past, usually with US puppets (see Viktor Yushchenko) and has problems now without a doubt. But Yanukovych's election was judged about as fair as it gets according to all the international agencies that monitor such things. His election was certainly a lot cleaner than Yushchenko's (remember, he claimed to have been poisoned by his rival and that helped win him the election. It has since been learned that the story about being poisoned was probably fabricated).

The point is, it's up to the Ukrainians to decide for themselves. What gives Victoria Nuland and Geoffrey Pyatt to decide who or who doesn't serve in the Ukrainian government? That's what they were talking about after all, not just dissing on the EU but discussing the recent offer made by Yanukovych to include two of the leaders of those street protests in the actual Ukrainian government. Nuland thinks one will be ok but the other she doesn't want in there, why should she have any say at all in the matter?

If we and the EU are pissed about the trade deal falling through, then why not just make a better deal?

Do you remember when Morsi (in Egypt) took over? One of the first things he did was arrest some members of a US democracy group, one of which was the son of a US senator. Even Morsi knew that the US uses these groups to infiltrate, stir up trouble and cause chaos in foreign states in the effort to further US interests.

It's also coincidence that Ukraine's last US puppet (Yushchenko) was a banker before he became the president. Hahaha, I guess if one elects a banker as their president then one deserves the corn holing that will be coming.

That's all, I don't give a rats ass about Ukraine's internal disputes. It's none of the US' business. Or the EU's for that matter. I'd hope that even you can see the conflict of interests on the part of the EU.
As for Russia, Ukraine is important to them. Keiv is known as the "The mother of Russian cities" and the cradle of the Rus civilization. It's a complex relationship to be sure, but Russia's largest trading partner in the world is Ukraine. That puts Ukraine firmly into Russia's national security interests. They shouldn't be mucking around in her domestic affairs, but at least Russia has a far better reason to do so than the US or the EU.

The greatest amount of tension between the two nations of late was back when it was Yushchenko and his thieving (but sexy) prime minister were in office. But both nations have the same roots in their ancestors. The US and EU?, not so much of roots as parasitic ivy.....

Saxi missed some subtleties about the situation in which protests develop.
-Rising income inequality; This is a weird one since Ukraine (and Czechoslovakia) has managed to keep this down for so long. Even though the oligarch system to a certain extent infects all of the former USSR, Ukraine managed to avoid having this in the public perception. The whole Oligarch concept is pretty frustrating to anyone trying to get ahead in life, and the anti-EU crowd is mostly led by 100 or so people who control almost all the economy and politics in Ukraine.
-Criminal Fun; Odessa is a major port-of-call for sex slavers, and there is about a human trafficking case every week added to the courts. 2% of girls in the Ukraine don't go to school. You can find them on mail-order bride websites though.
-Anti-Russian sentiment; Any rational person dislikes Putin's way of governing, and Russia generally. Since 1991, rational people have started to multiply in Ukraine. It's not so much a question of joining the EU as it is a question of fucking over those Russians. If Ukraine was closer to Sudan, they would gladly join the East African Community if it meant weaker ties with Russia. Any sane governor would prefer wearing a diamond dress and running through Sudanese streets rather than closer ties to Russia. Clearly, the leadership of Ukraine is not sane.

Can we nuke Russia yet?

I totally thought this was going to be a thread about Tunisian electoral reform. I think it is going to fail, just in principle. The panel dedicated to the process is called The Independent High Authority for the Elections, which has an acronym of ISIE. I'm sorry, but if your first move is making an acronym and you can't do that properly, how are you supposed to decide on a referendum process? Learn to English.
