God that's a tough one! I love both songs so very much!

In the end I decided to go with the Edmund Fitzgerald, just because it's a serious song, whereas Convoy borders on comedy, but it sure was a tough call.

My favourite line from Convoy is "Big Ben, this here's the rubber duck, we just aint gonna pay no toll!" I sing that each and every time I get on the highway! I also love the line about "put that microbus behind the suicide jockey -- he's pushing dynamite, needs all the help he can get!"

Still Convoy has never brought tears to my eyes, and the Edmund Fitzgerald often has. It also has some great and poignant lines. "Does anyone know where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?" "The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay,if they'd put 15 more miles behind her..." You think about those men, in the dark and the cold, fighting the fatigue, not knowing how close to safety they really were, and in the end losing the race.

It's a photo finish, but in the end I have to choose the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Huh. I was just going to pick the one I loved so much when it came out. You pit up a solid argument for the other one. I'm going to have to wait a while. Listen to them both more and deliberate.

USA wins hands down on sheer volume:

You get the point.

Although Gordon also has that song about jumping jet planes, which sounds exciting, only for him to say you can't do it and then lull my girlfriend back to sleep.

Is it incumbent upon me to vote USA regardless of what I actually think (as a patriotic Merican)?

I first misread this post, and thought you were a patriotic Mexican. And then I thought you were secretly in cahoots with Nietzsche. Move along.

Convoy is an ok song, but no competition for Gordon Lightfoot. Isn't there a better USA tune out there? Maybe Mr. Customs Man by Arlo Guthrie?

Wavin' Flag hands down ... We Are the World is so dated - also, how is it Willie Nelson looked as old and near death in 1986 as he does in 2014?

Well, maybe not on the scales. But maybe in the Porta-potty just before the scales.

Anyway, the true representative for round 2 would have been Tears Are Not Enough, of course. Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Corey Hart all bring out their powerful, haunting voices for their lines. As for Burton Cummings, his first line was not quite up to his best, but I think his little counterpoint after the second chorus is vintage Cummings, straight from the heart. Ditto for Carole Pope's counterpoint at the end.

Little House on the Prairie is in Canada. Minnesota is north of where I live, that makes it Canada.

I have done a report card, and I gotta give it to Laura Ingalls, on with a 3-2 margin.

Anne Shirley, well-written character with a flair for words. Laura Ingalls, rather insipid. Point: Anne Shirley

Anne Shirley, basically imaginary character vaguely inspired by a real person (or two). Laura Ingalls, real person, period. Point: Laura Ingalls.

Anne Shirley, essentially socialist worldview, paraphrases Keynes. Laura Ingalls, card-carrying Libertarian. Point: Laura Ingalls.

Anne Shirley loved to wrestle with the boys. Laura Ingalls was a virgin until marriage. Point: Anne Shirley.

Anne Shirley was depicted in a prime time series on CBC, also home of The Beachcombers and Friday Night With Ralph Benmergui. Laura Ingalls was depicted in a prime time series on NBC, also home of Banacek and Saturday Night Live. Point: Laura Ingalls.

This is really going to a tough call for TGD. I'm trusting his judgment, and will abstain from voting until he votes.

Garry Robbins was working as a nightclub bouncer a quarter-century ago when all 7-foot-5 and 380 pounds of him was recruited for a role in the Canadian slasher flick Humongous, where his character stalked a group of teens shipwrecked on an island. Now, after years on the professional wrestling circuit, parts in every comedy show that required the services of an overly large gentleman, and a starring role as a disfigured cannibalistic mountain man “Saw-Tooth” (pictured) terrorizing pin-up girls in 2003’s B-movie Wrong Turn, the 49-year-old is ready to be mayor of St. Catharines. The job has belonged to Tim Rigby since 1997, a senior politician who wants to move into a seat on Niagara Regional Council. That’s left the field open for new candidates including former curling champion Marilyn Bodogh, noted photographer Preston Haskell, and five others. Robbins has a resume quite unlike anyone running in this civic election, though, even if his campaign brochure emphasizes his volunteer work over his stunt work. Formerly known in the wrestling ring as “The Paul Bunyan of the North”, Robbins is confident enough of a victory on Nov. 13 that he’s already rebranded himself as “The People’s Mayor”.
