What do you think has more of a negative influence on OT participation:

1) The trolling on OT
2) The prevalance of cliques on OT
3) The prevalance of mind-numbing political debate on OT
4) 1 and 2
5) 2 and 3
6) 1 and 3
7) All of the above
8.) The prevalance of kittens being included in polls

???

Are there cliques in OT? I would like to know the cliques so I can try to join one.

Of the options listed above, I think it's some combination of trolling and mind-numbing political debate, but I chose mind-numbing political debate because that's why most of the people I know left.

I meant to vote 2 & 3 but I accidentally voted just 2. So please manually change my vote.

The issue of cliques is part of the reason I started the Conquer Club Platinum Lounge. However, it hasn't really taken off and so far I am the only one who has joined. Mrsdwk tried to join but he didn't redeem his invitation code in the correct place.

Why isn't "The roving bands of Mountain Trolls" an option?

Seriously? That's the main reason I stick around here--I enjoy reading the debates, even if I don't participate all that often.

And yeah, I'm not sure what he means by cliques...maybe just groups of people who tend to agree with each other on various topics and can then appear to gang-up on someone who disagrees, such as you and BBS with libertarian/free market views in certain threads? I wouldn't call it a clique though...everyone disagrees with everyone else in one topic or another.

By cliques I mean random people coming to OT and seeing a whole bunch of people who know each others styles talking about weird stuff (e.g. the way we satirise some threads by creating a number of offshoots - the countdown to election and countdown to electrocution threads for example).

I personally think that, while this is awesome for us the participants, I can help thinking that it puts some people off posting here.

Not a lot of personalities (thus, boring threads). My favorite OT time period was 10-11. There was a (relatively) large amount of traffic and a lot of users that brought something different to the table. Even if natty(_)dread, for example, was a hypocritical piece of shit, he brought something.

Good point. It seems like there's been less people around here recently, and therefore less discussion/fiery debates as well. Maybe that's just my impression though. Actually, part of it I think is that there's relatively few newbies here atm and a lot of veterans who have been here for years and feel like most things worth debating have already been debated to death. Then you get into the "refer to my response in this thread to your type of idea" rather than the real-time participation in the debate. Can't say I blame them though either.

I'm not saying that I think the political debate is mind-numbing or that I'm going to leave because of it (obviously... I love political threads). I'm saying I can think of more than a few people who got fed up with all the politics threads. Ironically, there are much less of the political threads now than there used to be.

I enjoyed that time period as well; I actually could have lively and intelligent back and forth with more than just a couple of people. Sultanofsurreal, Natty, snorri... just to name three. It's definitely different now than it was then, although I think people are still very entertaining. And of course Saxi.

Um... it's illegal to sell stuff that he found? Or did he steal it from an archeology site? I don't get it, but I demand justice!

I expect it is considered state archeology antiquities no matter where it is found in the country.

But why did he always bring vodka? You would think just once he would bring rum or even Uzo.

I was drawn to this thread by chatter about alcohol. Where do I sign up?

Also, I want to officially protest this pole. I demand, as is my right, the ability to officially vote for minimally four of the available options. Until I get this fixed, this pole is fixed and inappropriate.

Bollocks.

especially when its a pole instead of a poll. besides they left out an important option:

After all - Just because the kittens ate the Mountain Trolls is not a reason to leave out the option.

9. lack of newcomers.

We've got a stagnant (more likely declining) community. People got better shit to do, and CC is failing to entice fresh meat.

I saw his flag Captain Obvious.

It seems as if he prefers Canadian weed. I was wondering why.
