It must be a really bad year for movies if Gravity won the Oscar.

Really? A 96 on Metacritic and an 8.2 on IMDB equals a poor film? There were a ton of quality films this year - Dallas Buyer's Club, Fruitvale Station, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Blue is the Warmest Color. Any of them could have won.

They're special effects, cinematography and direction Oscars,
while the Wolf Turd on the Street got snubbed.

12 Years a Slave is Best Picture, had The Great Beauty not been a foreign film it might have had some competition.

I'd give all those films no higher than a 7/10. Some are just enjoyable one-time-see's (Fruitvale Station). Some are not bad but slow (12 Years a Slave)--honestly, Tarintino correctly handled the slave issue. The Great Beauty had 1 funny moment with the interview; I think I stopped watching about 1.5 hours into it (got bored; don't care about old rich people who wane in popularity and aren't funny enough to entertain me).

Dallas Buyer's Club and Warmest Color is Blue? Any movie about AIDS is immediately uninteresting. Gay/Lesbian romances have never been my cup of tea--especially the gay. "Do you want to see big sweaty guys?" Uh, no. "How about young, hot lesbians?" Maybe, but is it a romance? "YEAH!" Okay, no.

Wolf Turds on Wall Street is an expected 5/10. Not sure about American Hustle. IIRC the trailer, 5/10.

Who the f*ck cares about the Oscars?

Its nothing but political bullshit. Just because a film wins awards doesn't mean it's any good.

World War Z, This is the End , Spring Breakers, Side Effects, Sharknado, Hunger Games

These were the best films of the year (that I saw)

Also looking good:
The Wind Rises
Sightseers
The East
Through the Never

The genre I watch most is documentaries.
This year, Room 237 really took the cake.
Zizek is the greatest living philosopher, so when he has another movie I watch it, and it never disappoints.
The Square was a great lesson: getting the president out of office is only step 1, the rest of the revolutionary process is what is difficult.
Yay! Blackfish, yay! Always nice to see people get what they deserve.

Room 237 makes thinking fun. Well-filmed 'documentary'/commentary.

The East is an enjoyable one-timer.

This is the End
show

The Battery 2012 was an interesting apocalypse film. Impressive for a small-budget film.

Welcome to the Punch
is a silly action movie about British cops, bad guys, and other bad guys.

Filth 2013 runs in a similar vein, but it's more about the visual experience and madness.

Woody Allen pulled off an enjoyable one-timer with Blue Moon.

Her (2013) is an interesting futuristic, rom-com. They need more rom-coms like this.

I didn't think this was a great year for the Best Film Category, even though there were some good performances given. I do think Matthew Mconahaha was deserving of an Oscar this time out... Buyers Club, Mud and his spin in Wolf Turd were all excellent. Were there any legit Top 100 movies produced in 2013?

I haven't seen "Her" yet, "The Counselor" had abundant star power, was suspenseful but drawn out, predictable and didn't really deliver. The Great Beauty seen on the big screen was my favorite by far and one of the few motion pictures I've seen more than once in the theater.

Here's how 2013's movies are faring on IMDB's Top 250 right now:

74. The Wolf of Wall Street
119. 12 Years a Slave
134. Her
140. Rush
169. Gravity
206. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
248. Prisoners

Prisoners has an 8.0 rating, and Wolf is up at 8.4

I just saw American Hustle today, and I really was taken by it. I was impressed by how well Christian Bale lost himself in his role, and I have a new-found respect for him as an actor. Wolf left me feeling a bit cold, but Gravity was great. I completely missed out on Rush, despite all the posters of Chris Hemsworth in the MTR. Doh!

I love IMDB but new movies have hyperinflated ratings. There's no way Wolf should smell the top 200.

And the Hobbit? Seriously? I'm sorry but it was a load of garbage.

Yeah, IMDB is more skewed toward the average movie viewer. Citizen Kane, for instance, only comes in at #63, whereas it tops AFI's 100 Greatest Movies. Gone with the Wind is down at #152 on IMDB and #4 on AFI's list.

Both lists agree that The Godfather is pretty rad, though (#2 on IMDB, #3 on AFI).

They're just lists, though. =)

It's great to watch if you lower your standards--e.g. drink a couple beers and get high. Worked for me.

If I hadn't, I'd probably have stopped watching it within 20 minutes.

Gone with the Wind is too long for the twitter generation I guess. It's an epic movie (I mean that in many senses of the term).

Sergio Leone's 2 trilogies are amazing (the best being Good, Bad, Ugly and OUAT ... in the West)

237 was sweet. My jaw was on the floor though from Casino Jack (Abramoff) and Enron: Smartest guys in the room and Dirty Wars was eye opening. I'm a doc guy too, if you wanna swap good ones hit me up

The Act of Killing is the best one I've seen.

I'm gonna watch Mine Your Own Business sometime soon. I'll pump out a 38-page report with a one-page Executive Summary, so you can skip the remaining 37 pages.

When I record something to watch later, I find that while watching it i don't enjoy it as much because of the high expectations. But when I catch something I've been wanting to watch I enjoy it much more, even though I might have missed half of it or have to watch ads.
