Jesus, I was drunk! The admin decided to unban me last night when I was really lit! Originally I wanted Multi Troll to be a death metal song with a cookie monster voice. So if you or anyone else wants to help me fulfill this dream of creating death metal songs, that would be great!

Do you guys say it "mul-tie" or "mul-tee"?

I've always said it multee.

Mul-tie if the next vowel to follow is a short vowel, as in multi-billion dollar lawsuit.

Mul-tee if the next vowel to follow is a long vowel as in multi-lane highway.

Mul-tee Troll? It just doesn't sound right to me (but I'm American). I couldn't find the English rule on the pronunciation, but I did find this interesting post:

The Latin /ī/ was pronounced in Middle English as long /i:/ (as in Modern English seen), but the Great Vowel Shift (GVS), which turned Middle into Modern English, moved all the ME long vowels up a step on the vowel chart.

That meant that words like mice and house (/mi:s/ and /hu:s/ in ME), which were already at the top of the chart, couldn't go any further. So, to make room for ME /e:/ and /o:/ (as in seen and soon) at the top, they fell off and became diphthongs. In particular, ME high front /i:/ became ModE /ai/ , while ME high back /u:/ became ModE /au/.

Which is why mice and house are now pronounced /mais/ and /haus/. This means that multi- can be pronounced as in Latin or Middle English as /ˈməlti-/, or in post-GVS fashion as /ˈməltai-/.

From what I gathered, one can choose to use either Mul-tie or Mul-tee. Great Britain and Europe will tend to use Mul-tee and the US tends to use Mul-tie. Either way, it's a choice of how we communicate the prefix, and imo, doesn't have a set rule in the English language (of course, I am not an English major).

The same goes for regional differences. Where I am from in South Dakota, I say roof as ROOF with a shorter "o" or "oo" sound (it's a vowel sound somewhere between a short letter "u" and a long letter "u", similar to an umlaut but not as drastic), but I think most other Americans pronounce it ROOF with a longer vowel similar to a long letter "u" (as in the word "soon"). The same goes for the word "root". I don't make a big deal out of it, it's just a choice of communication that doesn't really interfer with what is being conveyed in the English language (unless of course you are borderline OCD or just have an anal type of personality all together).
