wow big news... You guys probably don't give a f*ck, but growing up in Spain I think it's a huge deal to see the king abdicate. A good thing. His son, the new king Felipe VI (46yo) has always been very apreciated, and everybody had a bad image of Juan Carlos after many stories in the past few years. He should ve done it years ago.

Wonder if Elizabeth II will abdicate soon too. Charles is past 60 lol... you imagine, getting prepared all your life for a job you start at the age of 70? lulz

Betiko, on a related note to this, I play EU4 and I am trying to ally with Spain and France against Great Britain -- I'm a Creek Nation in the New World, the leader of a federation of tribes. So far, Spain's monarch has decided it was a good idea.

I also forgot Spain still had a monarchy until recently.

The queen of England will abdicate to her grandson, not her son.

yes that s the big question... I guess most british citizens would rather see william take the succession directly. Not sure it's constitutional though, Charles would have to abdicate and leave the throne to his son. Don't think he's up for it.

Or go old school and have Charles killed. I think she is hoping he will die before her.

yes, those were the two I had a doubt on! Although technically in Monaco it's a Prince and in Luxembourg a Grand Duke. Not sure about Liechtenstein, a Grand Duke too?

Technically they are Constitutional Monarchies... so the naming of the title is not important :)
Andorra is another special case... much more complicated :)

Not really complicated; head of french + head of spanish state. Whoever is president at the moment in france + the king of spain are coprinces of andorra.

I imagine this is betiko's bedroom, except the posters are all of Prince William and Prince Harry and there's a giant box of tissue on the dresser.

Like them or not, these are the only ones who become history for the sake of being born.
Juan Carlos was supposed to be Franco's successor; he was raised as such since he was 12 after being taken from his parents that were exiled in italy. His grand father was supporting the early century spanish dictator primo de rivera... He was pretty much programed to be a fachist dictator with a king title.
Short after General Franco's death, Juan Carlos was put in power and all parties became allowed, including elections to form a government. The army then tried to perpetrate a coup d'état in 1981 assaulting the parliament; Juan Carlos didn't accept it and managed to bring the army back into reason. A real democratic state was set in spain. He is an important political figure, like it or not.
