One of the drawbacks of living overseas, coupled with my horrible memory, is missing out on things like BBQ on the 4th and no school on Thanksgiving Day. We still get together in November with friends to celebrate Thanksgiving and exchange gifts and sing carols on Christmas, but I miss things like Memorial Day and Independence Day. (We have similar days in HK, too, but they're mostly celebrated by demonstrations and lots of tourists clogging up the MTR.)

I will be having tacos and breaking pinatas.

BBQ, prolly get shitfaced. Have a good time.

I hope that's not exclusive to the U.S.

America has her problems but the same can be said of any relationship. I mean we fight and she may occasionally pass stupid laws or make decisions that I do not always agree with and now and then I've caught her looking at my phone or computer to see who I have been chatting with but at the end of the day, I still come back home to her. So yeah. I am still proud to be an American.

You really shouldn't compare late era-Rome (and I assume you mean the Western half of the Empire, because the Eastern half survived and thrived for another 800 years or so) to America, since the reason the Roman Empire fractured and fell apart was that it ran out of lands to conquer and use for plantations.

But they shouldn't be proud of being American, they should be proud that they bettered their situation. Countries are such an artificial concept and nationalism only strengthens them.
