Here's Tom Brokaw explaining Canada to Americans:

Of course it's from his American perspective but it's still pretty good.

Or here's a humorous Canadian clip explaining some of Canada's politics:

Or a little more about the land we live in:

Ah, so this is why I saw someone wrapped in a Canadian flag walking around near my apartment? At the time I thought it was probably something to do with tonight's Belgium v USA game, but this makes more sense.

I will not celebrate a nation founded on genocide

90% of all the nations out there are founded on genocide. Track any country down to its source, and you will find that at some point in the past a bunch of bandits rode into town, killed all the men, raped all the women, and proclaimed themselves the new "protectors" of the area.

That's just life. At some point you have to say that the wrongs of your long-dead ancestors are not your wrongs, and you have to celebrate what is today, not what shit was done 100 or 1000 years ago.

1 - those were dynastical changes, not new nations being built
2 - those weren't genocides

A pretty large number of today's nations were created by European colonialism, and the only times that colonialism resulted in something that could really be called genocide was in the US, Canada, Australia, NZ and possibly some parts of South America. African, Middle Eastern and South Asian nations were largely founded on the principle of 'cut the map up like this and give this bit to these people'.

It wasn't genocide3 in Canada. It was mostly diseases that killed the majority of natives. I can only name one tribe that is wiped out and that is the Beothuks.

Also, Tibet. Also, while not techinically genocide, the Great Leap Forward wasn't exactly a "Forwards" leap. Only millions of people died as a result of it is all...
