Probably so, but still. And truth be told, I can't recall Popeye EVER actually smoking from his pipe. In fact, he used it to pour spinach into, sort of like a straw (only by cartoon physics).

Before my time. And I've never seen the reruns of it.

Popeye is my favorite cartoon character. He was a gruff and tough sailor who became super strong and fast when he ate a can of spinach. My favorite Popeye cartoon was the 30's or 40's classic of Sinbad the Sailor:

Let it be known that Popeye wasn't originally meant to entertain kids (as also with LooneyTunes), but was actually meant for an adult audience. Popeye was originally a cartoon strip in the newspaper; however, the rumor mill from the time was that Popeye and Olive Oyl were based off of nasty jokes (much like today's Ole and Lena jokes). I can't confirm this rumor on the internet, but it was something I heard from the older generation when I was growing up as a kid.

Wiki does report speculation that Popeye was based off an actual human being from Chester, Illinois named Frank "Rocky" Fiegel (who lived in the artist's hometown).

Whatever the case may be, I am sure Popeye the computer animated movie is going to suck. It may be great for the up and coming generations who never grew up watching Popeye toot and twirl his pipe and blow smoke out his eye socket:

but for me, Popeye is only Popeye when he has a pipe, anchor tattoos, pops open a can of spinach with his bare hands, and uses the "twisker punch".

At 3:35 in the animated short "Twisker Pitcher" Popeye makes a loose drug insinuation about his spinach being "cut" and at 1:44 Bluto eats Popeye's can of spinach and fills the can up with (what Bluto refers to as) "weed".

I am guessing the Popeye franchise is beginning to hurt, since the younger generation never was exposed to him; and the only way the government would allow you to expose Popeye to kids is if the artists remove his pipe and tattoos. I say that the greedy vultures should just let Popeye die, and leave him for our generation. Eventually even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will quit being popular and begin a similar demise.

The pipe and spinach represent marijuana and it is omitted rightfully so. We don't want to influence young impressionable minds.
