New Year's Eve Safety Tips

COOKING: If power or gas service fails, do not use open flames or charcoal grills indoors. Stock up on nonperishable food and baby food in case your refrigerator shuts down. Keep a nonelectric can opener handy.
ELEVATORS: If you live in a multistory building plan your comings and goings, and deliveries, carefully as many buildings will ground elevators for about 15 minutes before and after midnight on Dec. 31.
INFORMATION: Use battery-operated radios and/or TVs to keep informed, along with enough batteries to power them.
PHONES and INTERNET: Expect brief temporary disruptions on Jan. 1 from too many people seeking a dial tone at the same time. An Internet logjam is also possible, so use it sparingly.
RECORDS: Have copies available of important records - recent bank statements, medical records and prescription drug information.
