Bill Gates Turns Poop to Water; Korean Netizens In AweBill Gates accepted and drank a glass of water from a faucet attached to a huge machine.
Bill Gates, Microsoft Founder: It’s water.
But just 5 minutes before, the water was human waste.
You put the lumps of excrement in the machine, turn up the temperature [to boil the excrement] and the resulting vapor becomes clean water.

If we didn't have a natural hydrocycle, and were already dead from polluted water, we could say: now if we'd only had that.
Now maybe the Africans who can't afford to rent a machine for a day to put in a well can not afford this machine too.

You know there are more ways of supplying technology like this than just waiting for impoverished people to buy it by themselves, right?

Technology like what?
It distills water. When and where will this ever be needed? We have pretty good processes for sewage. We could improve by extracting useful energy and resources out of it, but wasting mass amounts of energy to bring the process down to 5 minutes?
In Ireland they recently set up a plant for turning human waste into compost and town heating. It required no mega machines except in its construction. Mycofiltration is also a viable solution with settling and vortexing. It doesn't work in five minutes, but it doesn't need to. Cheap, energy efficient, easy to implement, few moving parts.
Bill Gates is doing a PR stunt. He pulled it on Fallon the other night. This machine helps just about no one, never will, isn't needed.

There's a higher chance that this was a Korean plot to get Gates to drink shit, than the Sony thing. Just saying.

http://www.vice.com/en_ca/read/that-bil ... -world-185Machine will cost $1.5m. It produces 300 kWh a day off of shit( Perhaps in Africa a businessman could get $200 a day off that? ) which if put in anaerobic conditions would produce 30,000 kWh a day.Just on creating a human waste bioreactor he could be earning $20,000 a day on the same amount of shit. But...
Let's see, they say that one of the issues it solves is throwing the feces into the water. And Africa doesn't have central plumbing so this would be handy. Extremely handy. You have to hand your shit to this African businessman who is going to pay $1.5m dollars so that he can go around collecting human shit all day and sell water to folks with no money. The future model will produce 85,000 liters a day, if you can get your hands on 100,000 peoples shit. I'm guessing the $1,500,000 dollar one does half? Maybe can earn after collection fees, bottling fees, distribution, $.05-$.08 per bottle. If you can your hands on that many peoples shit, go with the bioreactor ...I think it's easier to convince folks to buy energy from shit than water.
Nah, Bill will have some pushed through in agreements and some African cities will burn some of their shit delivered by preexisting plumbing and the villagers will not ever taste their own shit.

What is it with you and Africa? Nearly half of all the world's absolute poverty is in China and India.

This technology can maybe be used on the international space station in the future once the technology has progressed to become more efficient.
Additionally the way technological development works in a capitalist system is that technologies are no longer bound to sole purposes. Many technologies end up becoming components or products to entirely different causes. For instance, what if the same technology could be used to take different solids and extract different types of fluids from them? It's what makes technological advancement in a capitalist system so much more efficient than in a communist system. The constant attempts, even if futile help the general progress. So it might be premature to say the technology is useless.

Have you read the article? Or the blog of Gates? Or the article I linked?
It's being piloted in Africa and Gates has visions of African entrepreneurs. They specifically refer to servicing places without sewage lines. He's acting like he invented the Oreo cookie.
And Wauw, are you stupid? What "technology"? They are heating shit to 1000 degrees. I'm glad you are so enthralled.

Oh joy oh joy, reverting back to insults are we? I'm glad you are so petulant.
You know full well that every machine falls under the category of technology, how primitive or advanced it may be. So don't play dumb with me.

Doesn't fall into technology in my books.
Humans produce 0.25 lbs of shit a day with 70-80% water quantity. That is, if you could get the shit, you could get 80-90 ml out of it. For a 100,000 people, that's 8000-9000 l.
How do they propose to get the shit? Dig trenches for people to shit in. I guess in order to produce 85,000 l as claimed, they are going to be adding water.
So you still need to develop the same sort of infrastructure needed in normal sewage treatment, lose 99% of the potential energy from the material.
I like how they say it disposes of garbage. What they mean is organic material. There was an Austrian guy who lumped organic material and used it to cook, heat his water and heat his house. All he needed was some copper pipe. To me, that is a far better technology.
This is nonsense, a PR scheme. In Gates' blog he mentions philanthropy repeatedly. If I start selling a machine for $1.5m that then requires heavy infrastructure and is hard to profit off, I won't be claiming to be a philanthropist.

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/technology?searchDictCode=allwell apparently none of your books is called 'the oxford dictionaries'
But I do agree this seems more of a PR stunt than being sufficiently efficient for Africa. He should rather investigate whether it could be applied to something else or somewhere else.

I didn't know understanding what you are talking about meant evangelizing, but I do see the link of understanding and God.
Bill Gates is full of shit. Among his largest holdings are: pharma, McDs, coke. This f*ck has near zero interest in charity except inasmuch as it enables him to profit without accountability. This is the same guy who brought lawsuits against employees who wanted to quit, who listed full-time employees as temporary workers to avoid paying their benefits (he was ordered to pay $100m for this).
This is the same f*ck who increased polio rates in India, who owns the patent on the drug that goes along with the cure. This is the same asshole who believes Africa and parts of the Middle East should be depopulated. This is the same prick who isn't paying taxes so that he can direct his funds towards social engineering in line with his ideology.
His wife recently asked people to stopping slagging off his vaccine, which leads to lower birth rates. Interesting that his father was head of planned parenthood in Washington, that billy boy wants to depopulate areas, and provides medicine that profits his shareholdings, lowers birth rates and avoids paying taxes for it.
And how do you know it was his shit? Hopefully Kim had an insider who slipped in a bit of kimmy.
The comments section from the article you posted are gut wrenching. We live in a sad world.

Maybe some places do need depopulating. I know you seem to believe that we have the technology to multiply with gay abandon and still be able to fill everyone's bellies and teach the world to sing but that isn't really true.

If the global population keeps on growing as is then I seem to remember something about needing to double global food production in the next 30/40 years. How was it you proposed we do that again?

A good place to start would be to stop poisoning land out of production.
I think I have pointed out a lot of these methods, so I'll try to keep it brief:
Havana recently moved nearly all of its food production within the city. Cities are generally built on the best agricultural land around. This is why people moved there and why the area was able to develop large populations. Similar things have been seen in Detroit.
Recycling of organics, including food waste, human waste and biological waste adds to the nutrient levels and biodiversity of soil. If we weren't wasting these resources on bringing the natural cleaning of water down to an artificial one of 5 minutes, there is an abundant of usable material in these resources. Hot composting, or the Berkeley method, takes 18 days, produces extractable heat, results in much more organic material than regular composting. Equipment for simplifying the process is in the works.
Decentralizing composting, human waste treatment, agriculture would already provide double the food.
Permaculture successes: India, made agriculture without outside inputs profitable, healthier and created a better community. Jordan, turned a desert into an oasis, with the mushrooms desalinating the site. Africa, turned desert into agricultural land. China, turned barren land into productive agricultural land. Australia, turned an acre into a food forest capable of providing the total needs for 4 people per acre with 520 annual input hours.
Hemp, produces as much paper as 4 times the amount of land used for trees.
Onsite resources. One theory on the building of the pyramids was the use of geopolymers, that is basically a different recipe for concrete for materials found onsite. Cob, a material which is also made from onsite materials (soil which has been separated by density) contains most of the elements. One thing I'm working on is better methods for extracting, purifying and then reconstituting materials so that a building may be made from 90% onsite materials (in conjunction with HC).
By decentralizing materials and food production, we open up a lot of land for other uses, a lot of time for other things, a lot of space for transport. This will be furthered with 3D printing technology.
Earthships incorporate onsite greenhouses. Greenhouses have been developed that can be used with zero energy input. Incorporating a system which makes use of organic matter, converts it to extractable energy and plant food, that can then be used in a zero energy greenhouse to supply year round food, which means homesteading will be very different in the future.
Eventually, it will be completely automated. It will require less effort to compost than it does now, and the composter will see a return (whereas now they must deal with it for nothing and let the dump trucks haul it away).
Ipad is going nuts.
