Ok, so I watched the first episode, and while it may have cool characters and what not there's some stuff that really bugs me about this show...
Banshee is an American action-drama television series created by Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler originally appearing on the Cinemax network beginning on January 11, 2013. Set in the small town of Banshee in Pennsylvania Amish country, the series' main character is an enigmatic ex-con (Antony Starr), who assumes the identity of Lucas Hood, the town's murdered sheriff, to hide from powerful crime lord Rabbit (Ben Cross).
Take it from someone who's spent decades living in "Pennsylvania Amish country," the show doesn't reflect what it's like here. Contrary to what you see in pop culture there is no Amish Mafia. Our organized crime consists mostly of Hispanic gangs and members of the Pagans motorcycle club. Considering that Banshee is a fictitious town, I could overlook the lack of insight into society here, but there are a few glaring errors that make the show really hard for me to swallow.
A couple right from the go are the way they portray Indians and sheriffs. There are no native American tribes or reservations in Pennsylvania. We have members that live in the state, but their affiliated tribes and lands are located in other states. The Susquehannock tribe lived here a long time ago, and they were bad asses (noted for being irregularly tall cannibal warriors) but the last of them were killed in the 1700s.
As for Sheriffs in PA, they're elected officials here, so the idea that someone could just show up and take the identity of a sherriff who was recently "hired" doesn't work. Sheriffs don't do what they do in the show either, in that they don't enforce laws in the traditional sense. They're primarily responsible for prisoner transfer and duties of the court, which may include things like home evictions etc... They don't really patrol the streets or conduct investigations. That's what municipal and state police are for.
So for the time being I'm watching the show and taking it with a grain of salt, but it's pretty clear the writers didn't do any background research to see what things are like here. Their portrayal of the functions and role of sheriffs in PA really stand out as a glaring error...
