Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.

His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mr. Nimoy announced last year that he had the disease, which he attributed to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier.

I am too young to have remembered seeing the series in its original broadcast, but it was there for a time when I came home after school, and had a choice of exactly 2 channels. I first did not care for it much, but it was better than whatever was on the other channel. Later, i can to appreciate and then love it.

but, I also came to appreciate Leonard Nimoy in his "in search of" show, though I still take issue with his findings in a couple of shows.. mostly when they piled up stacks of small branches to try and melt a castle wall. Anyone who has done much with fires knows that its actually the bigger logs that generate the greatest heat.. and materials other than logs as well. Its hard to say, but that show may have had a lot to do with my going into science instead of law.
