The decline of Gary and other boys names with Germanic roots like Derek and Rudolph, is equaled by the parallel decline of Germanic-based girls' names like Agnes and Ethel and Gertrude. For some reason (perhaps associated with a post-colonial guilt complex) people of Anglo-Saxon derivation seem to want to turn their back on their own heritage and pretend they're something else.

The guys' names are fine. Mine is pretty close to one of those. The girls' names are terrible, though. They're old lady names. I don't think I could ever take a 'Gertrude' seriously without wanting some apple pie or something.

I had a pet alligator named Gertrude. Not sure if that's a plus or a minus...:)

Gertrude is a great name. It means "strong spear". It brings to mind the kind of girl you could take on a Viking mission with you, striding onto the beach by your side, holding her own in battle with the men. Maybe not the kind of girl you want every day, but certainly on some days.

Haha, mine means "one with a mighty spear." Probably just the male version of Gertrude.
