It is strange, I can probably count the number of times I've played SoC with one hand (and I mean without using either chisanbop or binary) but I feel that it is an old family friend.

Since we're on CC I can't be the only the one, so I'll share this with you.

My family refused to play Risk with me for the past couple of years, because I played CC and always won the game. So we ended up playing SoC. It's a cool game, but the taste is bitter when I think of it.

Oh, I used to play with a guy who was brutal at Cataan. I taught him how to play, and he was insufferable. =)

Risk was a fun board game, but dear god was it a terrible game to play with family if you'd played it before. Complicated, non-intuitive rules, a bizarre board, a bunch of basic maths at the start of every turn.

Settlers is a masterpiece of gaming- simple to explain, enough luck to make it interesting, generally balanced throughout.

the board game risk was horrible to play with friends who had the tendency to cheat. Go to the toilet and come back to a couple of cannons less.
Happened several dozen times :x

Cheating never came up for me, it was usually the boredom kicking in that stopped the game. Or my mates mum running the hoover through the room and knocking the board.

In RISK, I can wipe you off the board. In Cataan I am stuck with your bullshit city placement (which is always exactly where I was going to put my city).

In Catan, you can only place cities where you already have settlements. The places where other players have cities doesn't affect your upgrades.

I might be biased here, but if you want family friendly board games noting beats the "Railroad Crayon Games" from Mayfair, starting with the original "Empire Builder." India rails and Euro Rails can also be fun yet challenging as well. And it's educational as well (most people don't realize you can get cattle from Miami). And most importantly, you get to draw tracks with crayons!

Agreed. Love that series, the only one I'm aware of that I don't have yet is Russian Rails.
Some boards are better with two players (e.g. British and Nippon) Others are better with a lot of players (e.g. Empire builder, Euro Rails).
Don't get Iron Dragon.
Lunar Rails is interesting, but not for the average non-gamer I think.

But the "what resources are where" thing isn't always thought out well, if you're hoping for actual education.

* Unless you have been an avid D&D player all your life. I knew a married couple who were both avid gamers and they loved Iron Dragon.

(True fact, I almost did a TPK on the party when their (at the time) four year old daughter started saying "I'm the monster." The Kraken almost destroyed their ship.)
