I have a theory that anyone with a vanity, veteran, retired blah blah, etc., licence plate or decoration is insecure and possibly compensating for something. Why else would these people feel the need to showcase their obvious belief that any of these things make them "special". This is not to mention, of course, that all of the above are EXTREMELY tacky unless you're Johnny Cage.

I was driving my brother's pickup and stopped at the convenience store quick. I picked up a gut bomb and a Slurpee because I was high. When I got back into the pickup, this guy walks by and looks at me and says,"Thank you."

I was all like: Huh?

And then I remembered, my brother has a Vet plate and a Marine sticker in back. I thought to myself,"Great! I just lost two inches off of Mr.Winky!"

I have a vanity plate.
I have a K of C vanity plate because I have been active in the Knights of Columbus for a very long time (longer than I suspect most you have been living).

Also because NY won't allow the ultra cute choose life vanity plate with the crayon faces of a girl and a boy on it.

I do, however, have a licence plate cover with this theme on it.
Can you guess what my vanity plate says?

I've got nothing against the knights of Columbus, Im the first to scrabble after the candy you all shoot out of your rifles. It doesn't sound like you're the sort I'm referring to and I already know you're well hung so you can sit back down tzor.
I'm more referring to the " who gives a shit" type of plates like rerired marine, fireman, etc.. Vietnam vets I can understand because I know a few and that war really fucked them up proper. But the middle East? I just don't know...

What's with all the thanking, by the way? Do soldiers work pro bono now? Soldiers are taken care of very well these days and can go on to live quite comfortably after their service due to very generous benefits, all provided by working taxpayers. Who's thanking who here?

Does it really bother you though that people feel compelled to thank people who were in the armed forces? I mean like, I think to some extent it probably gets conditioned into people which whatever, but it seems like there are a ton of worse things people could do with there time/energy than being thankful for other people.

@notyou, I admire anyone who has a teeny weenie and doesn't feel compelled to compensate with a plastic licence plate border.

It is kind of like the Oshkosh sticker on my wife's trailer. If a pilot that has been to AirVenture sees it they know they can talk airplanes with me.

If you served and see one of those plates you know that person may have experienced similar things you have and is not going to be the guy with Jenny when Forrest sees her in D.C.

So What percentage of people do you think do the military license plate thing for the reason you mentioned as opposed to those who do it to receive "thank-you's" and other special treatment from random strangers?

More than half. Military people are encouraged to be proud of their service again.

I think it is quite despicable that people would mistreat a guy who was conscripted to fight in Vietnam because they disagreed with the war. It was probably not a fun thing to be forced into. Then people from your own country give you grief when you get home? Not cool.

I did mention earlier in the thread that most Vietnam vets do not apply here. I'm just not drinking the proverbial kool-aid in regard to some one who went and came back without so much as the risk of a scratch and sign up for the same plates as a guy who saw his buddies killed/went against his will, etc..
The disparity is very real and to give all "veterans" equal respect is a little naive.
